Route 1 Kids Weekend Guide: Jan. 31st-Feb. 2nd

Mr. Jon and Carrie “Rock and Rhyme” at the National Theatre’s FREE kids program!

Route 1 Kids have all the fun! Kids activities include Rock & Rhyme in DC, Heartstring Art in Hyattsville, Storytime in Mount Rainier, Owl & Kestrel in Laurel, Cub Corner in College Park & more. Check it out!

Friday

Ready to Read Storytime (Ages 3-5)
It’s storytime w/ a twist! Order fresh juice & enjoy books, songs, & more w/ a local librarian. At this weekly gathering, let the library come to you! See what we did here
When: 10-10:30am
Where: The Waterhole, Mount Rainier
Cost: Free! 

Gymnastics Workshops 
Come get your sillies out! Open gym play area. Fully equipped w/ trampolines, balance beams, foam pit, ropes & more! First come, first served. Max 3 kids per adult. Check out our time here.
When: 4:30-5:30pm
Where: Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex, Landover
Cost: $7/participant 

Lunar New Year: REACH Winter Lanterns 
Come celebrate the Lunar New Year! The Kennedy Center is the place to be. Oversized festive lanterns. Korean cultural activities including spinning dishes, Korean dress, calligraphy, mural painting, kite-flying & more!
When: 5:30-10:30pm
Where: Kennedy Center, Washington, DC
Cost: Free! 

Xtreme TEENS: JUST DANCE BATTLE (Ages 10-17)
Who’s got the moves? Come find out @ this battle of the dances. Staff will take to the dance floor too! Sure to be entertaining!
When: 7-10pm
Where: North Brentwood Community Center, North Brentwood
Cost: Free! w/ youth MNCPPC ID

Saturday 

Heartstring Art
Create a loving memory with your child at Home Depot’s Heart String Art Workshop. Tip: Get there early as supplies do run out. Must be with an adult. Register here.
When: 9am- 12pm

Saturday Morning Live! at National Theatre
Mr. Jon & Friends makes music for kids and their families that inspire fun, laughter, and dancing. The music of Mr. Jon & Friends is sure to bring a smile to your face! Check out fun at this free National Theatre series here!
When: 9:30am & 11am shows
Where: The National Theatre, DC

Cub Corner: A Letter to Amy (Ages 5 & under)
Who designed the mailbox? Come find out! Read age-appropriate stories about letters. Create your own letter crafts! Learn about African American history, too!
When: 10:30am-5pm
Where: College Park Aviation Museum, College Park
Cost: Free! w/ museum admission 

Meet Owl & Kestrel! (All Ages)
Meet two expert hunters. America’s smallest birds of prey. Learn about their stealth hunting skills & acrobatic prowess. See them in person!
When: 12:15-12:45pm
Where: National Wildlife Visitor Center, Laurel
Cost: Free! 

Crafternoon: Lunar New Year Craft (Ages 5-12)
Celebrate the Lunar New Year of the Rat w/ a craft! Create a folding book @ the library. Awesome way to expose little critters (your kids, we mean 😉 to worldly traditions.
When: 2-3pm
Where: Hyattsville Library, Hyattsville
Cost: Free! 

Yoga for Kids (Ages 5-12)
Keep the fun going @ the library w/ yoga for kids. Mats provided! Certified instructor led. Promote body awareness, mental focus & strategies to ease anxiety!
When: 3-4pm

Cost: Free! 

Community Drum Circle (All Ages)
Play world drums w/ a professional drum circle facilitator @ a local hip place. Everyone’s invited! Including your drums 😉 (or they’re provided…). All levels welcome!
When: 3-5pm
Where: New Deal Cafe, Greenbelt
Cost: Free! 

Sunday 

Super Bowl Sunday Kids Cooking Class (Ages 4-12)
Let your kids make the Super Bowl party appetizers this year! Meatball cooking class includes breakfast, chef hat & apron to take home! Let the cooking begin!
When: 9:30am (registration & breakfast), 10am (cooking begins!)
Where: Maggiano’s, Washington, DC
Cost: $25 kids, $15 adults (register by Feb 1)

Watkins Nature Center
Full of birds, snakes, insects, reptiles amphibians as well as puppets / dress-up and roomy enough for little legs to carefully run around. More on our time at Watkins Nature Center.
When: 8:30am-5pm
Where: Watkins Regional Park, Upper Marlboro
Cost: Free!

Photo Lab for Kids: Fun Family Portraits (Ages 5-12)
Lights, camera, action! Your kids the photographer today. Let them learn how to take family portraits w/ iPad Pros & iPhones! Learn all sorts of tricks to get that shot!
When: 11:30am-12:30pm
Where: Apple Carnegie Library, Washington, DC
Cost: Free! 

Mudcloth Workshop (All Ages)
Arts drop-in workshop! Led by local Artist in Residence. Materials provided. Limited number of walk-ins. Register in advance!

Diven’s Den
