Route 1 Weekend Guide: October 11th-13th

Route One Fun's Weekend Guide is up!

The weather’s going to be lovely and there are a ton of great, outdoor (and indoor) events happening near the Route 1 Corridor this weekend – so get out there and enjoy!

Friday

Twilight Tours 
Tour the National Colonial Farm after dark. Hear real-life & legendary ghost tales from Maryland history. You never know who or what you might encounter!
When: 6pm, 7:30pm
Where: Accokeek Foundation, Accokeek
Cost: $10 

Standup Comedy with a Surprise Guest (All Ages)
Check out a stand-up comedy show w/ surprise guest. Hints: they’ve been featured on the Late Night Show w/ Colbert, Comedy Central, among others & it’s a “she”. You’ll have to go to find out!
When: 7pm doors open
Where: Milkboy Arthouse Library Stage, College Park
Cost: $10

Pop-up Herb Party: Protective Charm DIY 
Come check out the first pop-up Herb Party. Tools, instruction, food & drinks included. Create your own herb-based remedies!
When: 7-10pm
Where: Distinctly Creative, Mount Rainier
Cost: $15-$20

The Listening Room Concert Series: Lauren Calve 
Listen to soulful music in an art gallery. Artist is local & blends blues, country & rock. Maryland Meadworks is selling drinks for the show!

Saturday

TOGETHER Program Workshop (Ages 18+)
Strengthen your relationship w/ stress management techniques, financial education & community resources. Workshop includes meal & gift card. Make a difference that lasts a lifetime!
When: 10am-12:30pm
Where: Family Science Department, School of Public Health, College Park
Cost: Free!

Oktoberfest (All Ages)
Kids activities, beer garden, live entertainment, authentic Oktoberfest food, corn-hole tournament. Might as well call this Rocktober fest. ‘Cause it’s gonna be awesome!
When: 12-8pm (note: kid activities end @ 4pm)
Where: Riverdale Park Station, Riverdale
Cost: Free!

Belgian Fall Festival (All Ages)
Experience Belgian culture, food, drink, crafts & music. An event in partnership w/ the Embassy of Belgium. Celebrate the Calvert heritage & a favorite season…fall!
When: 12-4pm
Where: Riversdale House Museum, Riverdale Park
Cost: Free!, $5 food tickets, $1 beverage tickets

Candles & Good Vibes!
Looking for an exciting and unique craft to experiment with – this is the perfect time! Learn how to make a highly fragrant soy wax candle. See website for more details.

Stories & Postcards for US Route 1
Learn about U.S. Route 1 through vintage postcards & stories from the past. Hear how unique Route 1 is & buy your very own historic book!
When: 2-5pm
Where: Montpelier Mansion Historic Site, Laurel

Azucar al rojo: A Celebration of Latin Dance (All Ages)
It’s an extravaganza w/ Latin American dance & music. See the playhouse come to life w/ swirling skirts, tapping boots & pulsating beats in honor of Hispanic Heritage month!
When: 8pm
Where: Publick Playhouse, Cheverly
Cost: $15/(ages 19 and older); $10/seniors (60 & better), students (18 and younger), and groups of 20+

Sunday

Afro-Latino Chamber Music Tour: Ceylon Mitchell, Flutist 
A classical crossover program performed by UMD flutis. Enjoy the sounds of virtuosic writing, national music styles & African rhythms, harmonic progressions &  flowing melodies of Caribbean music!
When: 4-5:30pm
Where: Joe’s Movement Emporium, Mount Rainier
Cost: $10-$20 

Lecture: Art with a Twist (All Ages)
Take a fun walk in art history. Culminates w/ discussion of local contemporary artists & the regional art scene.
When: 2-3pm
Where: Montpelier Arts Center, Laurel

The Dixie Cannonballs 
Check out an evening of bluegrass & honky tonk, Cannonballs style. Enjoy food & drinks at this hip cafe. Happy Sunday!
When: 7-9pm
Where: New Deal Cafe, Greenbelt
Cost: Free!, food and drink available for purchase 

Girl with a Pearl Earring 
A beautiful film that seeks to investigate the mystery behind Dutch Johannes Vermeer’s enigmatic painting. Enjoy exclusive access to a historical gallery for a gripping detective story. Who’s that girl?!
