Play, Hike & Water Fun at Adelphi Mill Playground

Adelphi Mill Playground

Kickin’ it old skool w/ oxen at Adelphi Mill Playground!

The Adelphi Mill Playground is a fun place for the kids to play, especially on a hot, summer day! Located in Langley Park / Adelphi, Maryland area on the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River, this Imagination Playground is full of structures reminiscent of when the Mill was a functioning one. (More on this below.) Afterwards, skip stones and cool your feet in the nearby river or take a leisurely walk along the adjacent hiking trails. Take a look at the fun to be had. Lovely time altogether!

The kids had fun climbing the water mill structure and then chasing each other to the nearby swings. There are also a couple of see-saws for the wee ones to have fun on.

Imagination Playground

As one of Prince George’s County’s 26 Imagination Playground, the Adelphi Mill Imagination Playground was designed in a style that harkens back to the mill days, where kids can play on a oxen-drawn cart with flour sacks as well as a water wheel structure similar to the water wheel that was actually used at this site.

One important note: There’s little to no shade at this playground, so prepare and play accordingly.

History of the Adelphi Mill

According to information obtained on the PG Parks & Recreation website: “Located on the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River, this 2-story stone gristmill built in the 1790s is the only surviving mill in Prince George’s County and the oldest and largest mill in the Washington Area.”

Refreshing River Fun

After a fair amount of time in the sun, we made our way across the path to the nearby Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River.

All had fun skipping and jumping the stones and then cooling down with refreshing dips in the river.

A Walk Along the Northwest Branch Trail

Suitably refreshed from a little water fun, we then enjoyed a light walk along the Northwest Branch Trail. Next time, we’ll definitely bring our scooters for even more fun!

The Adelphi Mill Playground is located at 8402 Riggs Road, Adelphi, MD 20783.

I drive by this one ALL the time. But have to keep driving to get to work! Now I know I need to pause one of these days and bring the kiddos. Thanks, R1F for the tips!

I know! That was our same experience – passed by but never stopped in, until we did! Kids had as much fun in the water as they did at the playground. Good time for all!
