Route 1 Weekend Guide: July 5th-6th

Happy Independence Day weekend, Route 1! So many cool events to check out this weekend, including Rock the Lift at Edmonston’s Community Forklift, a Gardenwalk at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Galactic Bowl in Riverdale Park, Riverdale Park ArtsFest and more! And GO USWNT! (And a reminder that weather may impact event status so check before heading out!)

Friday

Forklift First Fridays: Rock the ‘Lift (All Ages)
We love this monthly summer event that features live music, local art, and funky food trucks. Mystery sale and pop up bar plus kids activities. Everyone’s invited, including friendly leashed pets!
When: 6-8pm
Where: Community Forklift, Edmonston
Cost: Free!, But you can support your local artists and businesses by purchasing their wares and tipping the band.

Garden Walk @ Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens (All Ages)
Take a tour into this oasis with a park ranger. Get up close views of lotus, lily ponds and the connected tidal marsh. Pick up a historical fact about the family behind the gardens. Tours run approximately 1 hour. Don’t forget your camera!
When: 9am or 2:30pm
Where: Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens Visitor Center, Washington, DC
Cost: Free!

Galactic Bowl
This bowling alley turns things up a notch with a light, sound and video show while you bowl. Munch on snacks from their bar & grille. Don’t forget to hire babysitters. You’ll be playing into the wee hours!
When: 9pm-2am
Where: Rinaldi’s Riverdale Bowl, Riverdale Park
Cost: $5.99 per game, $4.99 per shoe rental

The Plate Scrapers
How about some bluegrass music with folk, jazz, and heavy metal dimensions? Let this hungry bunch “take you out of this atmosphere” with their musical performance. Call ahead and reserve a table!
When: 8:30-11:30pm
Where: The New Deal Cafe, Greenbelt
Cost: Free!, food and beverages for purchase

Saturday

Summer of Yoga Series
Venture into the city and check out an all-levels power yoga flow class. Bring your own mat. Arrive 15 min early. Register in advance. Take a moment to get grounded with some stretching and self-care. We hear there’ll be post-class treats. 🙂
When: 9-9:50am
Where: lululemon 14th Street, Washington, DC
Cost: Free!

Saturday Social Ride (All Ages)
Head out with the crew for a social paced, 8-12 mile round trip. Break halfway for snacks. Wear helmets. Bring lock, cash/cc. Kids in a trailer or child seat, attached to your bike, welcome or if they can ride (no training wheels) for at least 10 miles.
When: 11am-1pm
Where: Proteus Bicycles, College Park
Cost: Free!

Riverdale Park Artsfest (All Ages)
Summertime brings art into the open. Check out all the art vendors offering stained glass jewelry, fabric art, handmade dolls, and a variety of paintings, sculptures, and other art styles. Violinists, blues and jazz bands will liven up the space.
When: 12-6pm
Where: Riverdale Park Station, Riverdale Park
Cost: Free!

Swing 5 Live at the Meadworks!
You’ll be up and dancing in no time. Just as soon as you hear slap bass and the pulse of two rhythm guitars. Add to it melodic runs sweetly played on the accordion and a soaring fiddle. Enjoy a night of gypsy jazz and swing music.
When: 7-10pm
Where: Maryland Meadworks, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!, food and beverages for sale

Sunday

Women’s World Cup Final Today!

Yoga on the LAWN @ the National Building Museum
Who doesn’t love the National Building Museum?! Their latest exhibit LAWN sounds awesome. Imagine the entire Great Hall of the museum taken over by an immersive installation? Now picture yourself doing a yoga class in said art. Wow!
When: 10-11am
Where: National Building Museum, Washington, DC
Cost: $25, includes museum entrance

Your Presence is Requested: Calvert Family Weddings 1799-Today (All Ages)
A new exhibit is here for you to check out at this historical mansion. This time, they’re commemorating 220 years of family weddings starting with the original residents of Riversdale. Stay tuned for related special tours, events and concerts!
When: 12-4pm
Where: Riversdale House Museum, Riverdale Park
Cost: Regular tour fees apply

Fairwood Performance Series: Marc Evan, Soul Centered & Joi Carter (All Ages)
Enjoy house and soul music performed by a seasoned singer and songwriter. Take in the fiery sounds of a local performer known for her love for 80’s music like soca, funk, and rock!
When: 4-6pm
Where: Fairwood Community Park, Bowie
Cost: Free!

Choro Das 3
Trio sister/father band plays in seamless harmony, carrying on the rich tradition of Brazil’s first popular music choro. Shows have sold out the past two years. Get your tickets now!
When: 6pm doors open, 7pm show starts
Where: MilkBoy ArtHouse, College Park
Cost: $25

    Rinaldis has free bowling for kids during the summer. You have to register at kidsbowlfree.com
    Print out the coupons and you can go. I suggest calling before going if lanes are available.
