Voices in the Dark: Celebrating Black History
In 1936, 70 years after the legal end of slavery in the United States, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt approved a historical research project commissioned by the Library of Congress. The goal of this enormous project was to locate and interview African Americans who had been born into slavery during the early to mid-1800s. More than 2,300 former slaves were interviewed; survivors of one of this country’s darkest periods. Their stories became what are now known as the WPA Slave Narratives. Several of these incredible stories are brought to life in the original stage production “Voices in the Dark.”
