Route 1 Kids Weekend Fun Guide: May 10th-12th

Plenty of fun to be had this weekend – including curious minds exploring nearby Nature Center!

Lots of kid-friendly fun to be had this weekend along Route 1! Family Campfire at Watkins Regional Park, Arts Drop-In in College Park, Illumination Day in North Brentwood, Battle of the DMV in Greenbelt, Greenbelt Green Man Festival & more!

Friday

Mt. Rainier Nature Center
Check out some hands-on exhibits, live animals, educational displays, a play area and more at this fun, free, petite, local site. Read about our time at the Mount Rainier Nature Center here!
When: 9am-5pm
Where: Mt. Rainier Nature & Recreation Center, Mt. Rainier
Cost: Free!

Small Fry Club: It’s Easy Being Green (Ages 2-4)
Kermit had it all wrong, my friends. Being green IS easy 🙂 Leap on over to this center tucked in the woods for earthy fun! Stories, crafts, games, and hikes. This month, learn about color changes in nature, little tadpoles in tow!
When: 10-11am
Where: Watkins Nature Center, Upper Marlboro
Cost: $4

Come Out N’ Play! (All Ages)
Bring the kids to this free event full of activities, food, and exhibits! Have fun and support Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week at the same time!
When: 6-8pm
Where: College Park Community Center, College Park
Cost: Free!  

Family Campfire – Critter Courtship: The Songs of Love (Ages 2+)
Pull up a chair (or a log!) and enjoy some campfire entertainment. Toast up some gooey marshmallows, included with sticks. Hear nature tales about animals and how they attract mates. Oo-la-la!
When: 7:30-9pm

Route One Fun 2019 Summer Camp Guide

Saturday

Family Discovery Hike (Ages 4+)
Yoo-hoo, oh wildlife and plant life, where are you??? Let’s find out together, on a hike! Bring the entire family! A naturalist will guide you, just don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Happy trails and hunting, ya’ll!
When: 10-11am
Where: Watkins Nature Center, Upper Marlboro
Cost: $3

Children’s Arts Drop-in Program (Ages 3-8)
Watercolor, you are so wonderful. Wonderful enough to make me want to drop in for some painting time with my kiddo. All supplies included. Oh, yes! I’ll definitely be there. Thank you, thank you! (Hint: this month’s art theme is wonderful watercolor…you’re welcome) :-).
When: 10am-12pm
Where: College Park Community Center, College Park
Cost: Free!

Song of the Seas (Ages 7+)
Mesmerize your kids with a legendary Irish tale about two siblings trying to save the world of magic. Their epic journey leads them to discover the secrets of their past. A hand-drawn masterpiece, come experience this wonder of magical storytelling on screen!
When: 11am
Where: Old Greenbelt Theatre, Greenbelt
Cost: $7 – adult; $5 – 12 and under; member – $6.50

Route 1 Mamas & Papas: Finding & Building Community

Illumination Day (All Ages)
Loads of indoor and outdoor family fun. Scavenger hunts, art lab and more for the kiddos. Paint and sip, and music for the adults. Interactive presentations for all including artists talks, historical walking tours, and a pop-up exhibit chronicling U Street’s black community. Enough to keep the entire family busy!
When: 11am-4:30pm
Where: Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center, North Brentwood
Cost: Free!, rsvp here

Battle of the DMV (All Ages)
The dance floor is about to heat up at this 3rd annual dance competition. Youth majorette and hip hop teams compete for $3000 in cash/prizes. Wow-eez! Be one of the lucky ones at this spectacle and receive an audience giveaway or buy some delicious food or merchandise for sale.
When: 12pm-6pm
Where: Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Greenbelt

You're invited to Greenwood's 6th Annual Fiesta de Greenwood!

Sunday

15th Annual Greenbelt Green Man Festival (All Ages, rain or shine!)
A magical celebration for the kids (and their adults!) to partake in. Make your own fairy garden, write your own fairy wish, enjoy some drum circle time, and check out the children’s area and solve clues in a mystery scavenger hunt to cash in recycled items for a special prize. Enjoy face painting, body art, live music and so much more in honor of Mother Earth!
When: 11am-5pm
Where: Roosevelt Center, Centerway, Greenbelt
Cost: Free!, vendors on site to purchase goods/services and food from

Joint Base Andrews Air & Space Expo 2019: Legends in Flight (All Ages)
Look up! Enjoy the aerial spectacle. Features include military service planes. Witness their twists and turns in the air or explore the many air and space-themed exhibits, displays and demos for all ages. On site amenities for families including a mother’s lounge! Bravo!

Mother’s Day Tours (All Ages)
Bring your children to this historic house, they’ll make a mother’s day card, you’ll get a complimentary tour of the museum! Deal good for mothers AND grandmothers. We wouldn’t be here without them!
When: 12-4pm
Where: Darnall’s Chance House Museum, Upper Marlboro
Cost: One free admission per paying child, admission fees listed here
