Route 1 Weekend Guide: October 4th-6th

Crush Funk Brass will be at College Park Day!

Crush Funk Brass will be doing their thang at Saturday’s College Park Day!

It’s gonna be a beautiful weekend – which is especially fortuitous as there are so many fun, local events you’ll want to check out! Riverdale Park’s mixing your literary and ABV love with Books & Beers event, Hyattsville’s Zombie Run will keep you active and feeling good about supporting our local public schools, College Park Day will keep kids and adults entertained with all its activities and Berwyn Heights has some nifty ways to keep your four-legged friends happy & healthy! Enjoy!

Friday

Books & Beers
Buy books, CDs and DVDs at bargain prices, contribute to a charity for children’s education. Beer available from Denizens Brewing Co. Your two new favorite “Bs”!
When: 11am-9pm
Where: Riverdale Park Station, Riverdale Park
Cost: Free!, items for sale $6 & below, beers too

Hart GP Jazz (All Ages)
The week is over and now it’s time to unwind. Why not do so at a quaint park with an artist playing jazz on trumpet? A musician friend may join him (and you!) for this live performance. Should be food trucks to eat dinner or bring your picnic.
When: 6-7pm
Where: Little Tavern Park, College Park
Cost: Free!

Forklift First Friday (All Ages)
Inside and out, there’s fun to be had. Grab a drink from the pop-up bar. Get in line for face painting and balloons. Order BBQ, take a seat w/ friends, listen to music. And shop! Featured vendors include pop-up fabrics, wood, pottery, and furniture.
When: 6-8pm
Where: Community Forklift, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!, food, beverage and store items for sale

Swing Set Live! (All Ages)
Make yourself at home with a glass of mead on tap and be thrilled with the music of Hyattsvillians and their songs of love and hate. The place will be percolating with steady swing grooves. Kid friendly show!
When: 7-10pm
Where: Maryland Meadworks, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!, beverages sold separately

College Park Day is October 5th, 2019!

Live music, food, beer and fun at College Park Day this Saturday!

Saturday

Hyattsville Zombie Run!
Hyattsville Zombie Run is a fun 5K race to raise money to support our local schools! Dress up as a zombie or any Halloween costume to add to the fun! More about this fun race here.
When: 8:45-11am
Where: Magruder Park, Hyattsville

Pet Pop-Up Event! (All Ages)
We know you love your pets like we do. That’s why we encourage you to attend this event featuring low cost pet vaccinations and microchipping, adoptions, raffle for goody baskets, and costume/talent contests. It’s going to be paw-some 😉
When: 10am-1pm
Where: Town Center, Berwyn Heights
Cost: Free!, $1/raffle ticket

Riverdale Art & History Tour
Want to learn more about the history in your own backyard?? Meet Aaron Marcavitch, from Maryland Milestones, in Bear Square and take a tour of Riverdale Park Station!
When: 10:30am

Cost: Free!

College Park Day
Live music, exhibits, activities, food and tasty beverages at this fun community event!
When: 12-6pm
Where: College Park Aviation Museum, College Park
Cost: Free!

Fall Wine Festival
Taste more than 70 different wines, partake in the best wine sale of the year and listen to the sweet sounds of the Magic Ray Jazz Band!
When: 12-6pm
Where: Yes Organic Market, Hyattsville
Cost: Up to you! 😉

Contortion, superpositions Artist Talk 
A new exhibit is here. Come check out the gallery and discuss the art with participating artists. Highlights include figurative painting, drawing and sculpture. Wine and refreshments will be served.
When: 2-4pm
Where: Gateway Arts Center, Brentwood
Cost: Free!

Glade Dance Collective: Dance Improv Workshop & Performance
Explore dance improv with a DC-based modern dance company. Express yourself through movement in a nurturing workshop. Take part in their evening performance that follows.
When: Workshop @ 4pm; Performance @ 7pm
Where: Old Parish House, College Park
Cost: $10/workshop

Comedy Night @ Laugh House (Ages 21+)
Being in the burbs is something to laugh about. At this show it is, you’ll get a comedy show close to home with a good time that starts at the door. Tonight’s comedienne is Alycia Cooper Let us know what you think!
When: 7pm (doors open @ 6pm)
Where: KOF Sports Cafe, Bowie
Cost: $10-$25 and 2-order minimum

Sunday

Takoma Park Street Festival (All Ages)
A block party with artisans, musicians and food vendors. A half-mile stretch carved out for the community to enjoy the festivities with children’s activities and plenty of shopping!
When: 10am-5pm
Where: Main Street Takoma, Takoma Park
Cost: Free!, vendors with items for sale

Artful Afternoon (All Ages)
Feeling artsy? This is the place to be. Check out the Artists in Residence studio open house and art market. Explore the art gallery and local history exhibits. Enjoy a dance piece and participate in art activities related to the performance!
When: 1-4pm
Where: Greenbelt Community Center, Greenbelt
Cost: Free!

Riversdale Chamber Music Society Concert: Ceylon Mitchell 
Listen up! It’s a free concert to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Enjoy classical flute music influenced by Latin American and the Caribbean. Reception with the artists follows. Make it an afternoon and tour the museum.
When: 2:30-4pm
Where: Riversdale House Museum, Riverdale Park
Cost: Free! (tour admission sold separately)
