Kids Weekend Guide: Feb. 7th-9th

Shrinky Dinks at Brentwood Arts Exchange

Been making shrinky dinks together since 4Eva.

Route 1 Kids Weekend Guide is full of fun things to do this weekend in Hyattsville, College Park, Mount Rainier, Bowie, Brentwood & beyond! Kids can make some shrinky dinks, Step & Gumboot Workshop for the older kids, Maple Sugaring Days & more! Share this Guide to keep the fun times going!

Friday

Mouse on the Move (Ages 1-5)
Reach beyond the stars w/ two mice on an adventure to the moon. Is it really made from cheese? They sure hope so! 😉
When: 10:30am
Where: Imagination Stage, Bethesda
Cost: $12

Ready 2 Read Storytime: Coretta Scott King Book Award (Ages 3-5)
Celebrate Black History Month w/ stories, songs & crafts. Enriching & fun!
When: 11am-12pm
Where: South Bowie Library Branch, Bowie
Cost: Free! 

Jazz Story Time w/ Loria (Ages 3-6)
Interactive storytime w/ crafts. Celebrate a famous African American in jazz! Register in advance.
When: 11am-12pm
Where: Bowie Community Center, Bowie
Cost: Free! 

Gymnastics Workshop (Ages Walking to 12)
Gymnastics drop-in! Trampolines, balance beams, foam pit & more! Check out the fun we had here.
When: 4:30-5:30pm
Where: Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex, Landover
Cost: $7/participant

Saturday

Put Art in Your Heart  (All Ages)
Come out & make valentines for families, friends & seniors in Hyattsville!
When: 10am-12pm
Where: Hyattsville Municipal Building, Hyattsville
Cost: Free! 

Open Gym (Ages 2-6)
Stop in for a high energy movement class. Sports-like games & open play to help kids develop physical movement skills & gain spatial awareness of their bodies.
When: 11:15am-12:45pm
Where: Joe’s Movement Emporium, Mount Rainier
Cost: $10

Archaeology Lab Experience (Ages 8+)
Roll up your sleeves & get ready to process real artifacts discovered @ Mount Calvert Slave Quarter excavation. Animal bones, oyster shells, memorabilia, & more treasures.
When: 11am-3pm
Where: Mount Calvert Historical & Archaeological Park, Upper Marlboro
Cost: Free!

Step & Gumboot Workshop w/ SOLE Defined (Ages 11-17)
Calling all dancers! Come discover step & gumboot. Dances rooted in African American culture. Engaging workshop w/ demo & history exploration! Pre-registration required.
When: 1:30-3:30pm
Where: The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center, College Park
Cost: $5/dancer 

Unshrink My Heart: Valentine’s Shrinky Dinks
An annual fan fave. Make Shrinky dinks Valentine keepsakes like jewelry, key chains & more! We love this workshop! Brings back the ‘80s!
When: 2-4pm
Where: Gateway Arts Center, Brentwood
Cost: Free!, addtl sheets $.50 each

Sunday

Family Day: Mongolia’s Past and Present (All Ages)
Celebrate Mongolian culture! Performances, games, interactive art demos & more! Meet musicians. Learn about Mongolian painting & calligraphy, play traditional games in a real yurt!
When: 1-4pm
Where: National History Museum, Washington, DC
Cost: Free!, registration requested, get tix here 

Owl Pellets (Ages 7-15)
Discover what owls eat! Look for clues in owl pellets. Bonus, Eastern Screech Owl will join the workshop! Registration required.
When: 2-3pm
Where: Patuxent Research Refuge (North Track), Laurel
Cost: Free!

Maple Sugaring Days (Ages 3+)
Watch the maple sugaring process live! See sap drip, taste it, watch it boil down to maple syrup. More tasty treats to follow! Space limited, pre-register!
When: Various times Saturday & Sunday in February
Where: Brookside Nature Center, Wheaton
Cost: $7

You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown 
Classical musical comedy based on the comic strip, Peanuts! Join all your fave characters on stage!
When: 3pm
Where: Bowie Playhouse, Bowie
Cost: $25 general admission, $15 children 12 and under
