Kids’ Weekend Guide: June 15th-17th

Did you say you wanted to get the kids involved in a Public Art Workshop? Well, looky here; there’s one this weekend! How about getting their hands busy building some wooden model thingamajigs? There’s an option for that as well! There’s also a Family Fest Book Fair, Juneteenth, Paw Patrol at Eastern Rhodes and more, all this weekend! Read on!

FRIDAY 

Wonderful Wetlands (All Ages)
Summer is finally here! Come meet some of the animals that live in our wetlands, take a self-guided wetlands walk, and learn why wetlands are so important. Enjoy hands-on activities, crafts and games.
When: 10am-1pm
Where: Patuxent Research Refuge, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel

Storytime PopUp! @ The Waterhole
Join us for stories, songs, fingerplays and more at this innovation collaboration between PGCMLS & Mt. Rainier’s fabulous organic juice & smoothie joint, The Waterhole. Best for 0-5 years old. Curious? Click here for my review of The Waterhole!

Hyattsville’s Summer Jam Series!
We love Summer Jam! Live music, food, beer/wine, kids frolicking around, parents earnestly attempting however disjointed conversations with friends and neighbors. Includes moonbounce and kids’ activities, too! Can also check out Hyattsville’s Micro Farmers Market!
When: 6:30-8:30pm
Where: City Municipal Bldg, 4310 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville

SATURDAY 

Photo-Adventure Scavenger Hunts
Using clues, hunt on trails for sculptured stones, mystery object, plants and animals while learning about the history and features of the refuge. A camera or cell phone is needed.
When: 9am-1pm
Where: Patuxent Research Refuge, North Tract, 230 Bald Eagle Drive, Laurel
Cost: Free!

Public Art Workshop (All ages!)
Join Art Works Now, The Clarice, Urban Arts Leadership Program and Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance as we collaborate to create a public work of art to be displayed at MilkBoy ArtHouse in College Park. 
When: 10am-1pm  
Where: Art Works Now, 4800 Rhode Island Ave, Hyattsville
Cost: Free! 
Build a Wooden Model! 
Come in to build a wooden model of a boat or a plane. This is fun for a child and adult working together. Great Father’s Day Activity! Children under 10 must have an adult helper with them. 
When: 10am-12pm 
Where: Artist & Craftsman Supply Hyattsville
Cost: $5 (buys the model kit and paint/glue)

Juneteenth Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. At this free, family event, enjoy the cultural heritage of African Americans through live music, art, dance and crafts.
When: 12-5pm
Where: Watkins Regional Park, 301 Watkins Park Dr., Upper Marlboro
Cost: Free!

Imagine Family Day Fest and Book Fair
Join us of a free day of fun for the entire family, with interactive and education community festivities designed to celebrate the cultural and artistic diversity in Prince George’s County. Featuring vendors market and book fair, moon bounce, face painting, Early Keepers Workshop, Live Art Activity, DJ Super Sid, Food Trucks.
When: 1-6pm
Where: Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center, 4519 Rhode Island Ave
Cost: Free!

Eastern Rhodes Public Place Opening
On this Father’s Day weekend, we invite your family and pups to Eastern Rhodes Public Place at the “V”, a temporary public park located at the corner of Eastern and Rhode Island Ave. Kids’ activities as well (special guest appearance from our Paw Patrol friend).
When: 1pm
Where: 3200 Rhode Island Ave, Mt. Rainier
Cost: Free!

Libraries Rock! Block Party!
Crafts, Moonbounce, Entertainment, Raffle and giveaways!
When: 2-4pm
Where: Hyattsville Library, 6502 America Blvd, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!

Star Party (Children & Adults welcome!)
Visit the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt’s observatory to see the universe! Look through club members’ telescopes or bring your own. Event will be canceled if it’s too cloudy to see any stars.
When: 9:30pm
Where: Northway Fields Park, Greenbelt (observatory is at end of a dirt road)
Cost: Free!

SUNDAY 

Indian Creek Playground
Any time this weekend, check out this really fun and creative playground designed after Berwyn Heights’ earliest residents – a group of Algonquian people known as Nacotchtank. Kiddos will have a blast climbing teepees, in an out of canoes and up and down dream catchers. If you get hungry afterwards, check out

Anacostia Riverwalk Trail – Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
Head to Bladensburg Waterfront Park (BWP) and explore the 4-mile segment of the Trail now connecting the District with BWP! We packed lunches, parked at BWP and then walked the Trail all the way to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. It was lovely! Grab a bit of respite at Kenilworth, maybe eat that lunch you packed and then head back to BWP, where the kids can play/climb/laugh in an old B & O caboose.
When: Sunrise to Sunset
Where: Start at BWP, 4601 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg

Cost: Free! 

Family Movie Series: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Watch on the waterfront! Seating not provided so bring some lawn chairs!
When: 6pm
Where: National Harbor, Oxon Hill
Cost: Free!
