Kids’ Weekend Guide! April 28th – 30th

Hyattsville’s Anniversary Carnival is this weekend!

This weekend’s going to be a hot one – and so are your choices of things to do!  Celebrate Hyattsville’s 131st Anniversary by checking out its fun carnival, 2017 Maryland Day has over 100+ fun, family-friendly activities to explore, a new Brazilian Cultural Center is throwing a grand opening bash this weekend & more!  All here!

FRIDAY 

Magic: The Gathering Club 
Come cast spells and battle wizards in our favorite fantasy card game.  Bring your own cards or use the ones we have here.  All experience levels welcome, from never-played to expert.
When: 4:30-5:30pm
Where: Hyattsville Public Library, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!

Open Gym at PG Sports & Learning Complex
If you haven’t checked this place out yet with your energetic 1-12 year old(s), then let this be the day! This place is really great. HUGE. Two climbing walls. Two foam pits. Tons of equipment for curious ones to explore and blow off some steam. Very clean. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Parents are required to be on the floor with the children (Maximum 3 child:1 adult).
When: 4:30-5:30pm
Where: 8001 Sheriff Road, Landover
Cost: $7 per child.

Hyattsville’s Anniversary Carnival!
Carnival Amusements for the whole family!  Rides, games and good concessions!
When: 5-10pm
Where:  Magruder Park, Hyattsville
Cost: Purchase tickets for rides and games at Carnival

SATURDAY

Family Mental Health & Wellness Expo
Fun, free opportunity to meet with providers of behavioral health and wellness services and supports in our community.  Connect with other youth and families faced with similar challenges and learn about support groups in the County.  Giveaways, yoga, moonbounce, face painting & more!
When: 9am- 12pm
Where: Eleanor Roosevelt High School, 7601 Hanover Parkway, Greenbelt
Cost: Free!

2017 Maryland Day
With over 400 interactive activities andone-day open house featuring family-friendly and interactive events. Live performances, kids’ carnival featuring the boot camp obstacle course and inline extreme aid quad jumpers, free samples of ice-cream from the Maryland Dairy. Use the Plan Your Day site to select activities of most interest to you and your family!
When: 10am-4pm
Where: UMD, College Park
Cost: No entry fee

Brazilian Cultural Center – Opening Weekend Fun!
Join us for a day packed with Brazilian culture, starting with an open capoeira roda from 10am-1pm; Frevo Dance Class from 1:30-2:30pm; Samba de Rode de amigos (traga seu instrumento/bring your instrument); Samba Trovao show and dance party at 4pm to close out the evening!

Cost: Free (food available to purchase in afternoon: $5)

Ready 2 Read Storytime: Ages 2-3 
Bring your toddler and join us for stories, songs, fingerplays and more!
When: 10:30-11am
Where: Bladensburg Library, 4820 Annapolis Rd, Bladensburg 
Cost: Free!

Be Excited About Math Fair
Please join the PGCPS Elementary Mathematics Department and library staff for fun hands-on math activities, math fact challenges, story time and prizes.
When: 10:30am
Where: Greenbelt Library
Cost: Free

Hyattsville’s Anniversary Carnival!
Carnival Amusements for the whole family!  Rides, games and good concessions!  Live music by the Vybe Band, beer and food sales from 6:30-8:30pm.  Mandy the Clown all day Saturday & Sunday! Fireworks at dusk.
When: Noon-10pm (see site for more specific info) 
Where:  Magruder Park, 3911 Hamilton Street, Hyattsville
Cost: Purchase tickets for rides and games at Carnival

Halfway to Halloween
Because once a year is not enough!  Get more use out of that great costume, and come have fun! Costume parade, costume contest, games, prizes, activities, music, food, face painting, snacks and beverages for sale. Cash bar! 
When: 1-4pm
Where: Cheverly American Legion Auxiliary Unit 108, 3608 Legion Drive, Cheverly
Cost: Free!

Dia de los Ninos
Join us for a multi-lingual celebration of children’s books featuring stories, songs, and games in Spanish, French, and Amharic.
When: 3:30-4:30pm
Where: Hyattsville Library
Cost: Free!

SUNDAY

Life, Animated
For Autism Awareness Month, we are screening this coming of age story about a boy and his family who overcame great challenges by turning Disney animated movies into a language to express love, loss, kinship and brotherhood. After the film, there will be a moderated discussion with Rev. Mark Granfors-Hunt, M. Div,. a Special Education Paraprofessional at Prince George’s County Public Schools’ James E. Duckworth Regional School.
When: 1pm
Where: Old Greenbelt Theatre
Cost: Free!

Anacostia Riverwalk Trail – Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens 
Head to Bladensburg Waterfront Park (BWP) and explore the new 4-mile segment of the Trail now connecting the District with BWP!  We packed lunches, parked at BWP and then walked the Trail all the way to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens.  It was lovely!  No traffic – just folks outside loving this new addition!  Grab a bit of respite at Kenilworth, maybe eat that lunch you packed and then head back to BWP, where the kids can play/climb/laugh in an old B & O caboose.
When: Sunrise to Sunset
Where: Start at BWP, 4601 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg
Cost: Free!
