Adults’ Weekend Guide: August 2nd-5th

From an art opening in Hyattsville, boot camp in Bladensburg, yoga in College Park, to a film screening and an ‘All the Stars’ Outdoor Dance Party in Brentwood, this weekend is gonna be one for the books!

THURSDAY 

Bird Walk at Lake Artemesia 

Find many species of birds by sight and song, learning from an experienced guide. All skill levels are welcome. Binoculars recommended. No reservations required. Sponsored by the Prince George’s Audubon Society and the Patuxent Bird Club, a chapter of the Maryland Ornithological Society.

When: 6pm 
Where: Meet in parking lot at Berwyn Road and 55th Avenue in Berwyn Heights.

Summer Body Boot Camp
Fitness in the Parks is a FREE exercise program that brings a variety of fitness opps to parks and natural areas across Prince George’s County!
When: 6:30pm
Where: Bladensburg Waterfront Park (near playground), Bladensburg
Cost: Free!

The Spice Band
The whole family will enjoy a FREE concert on the Green at beautiful Watkins Regional Park with this hot R&B soul group, The Spice Band! Refreshments will be available for purchase. When: 7-8pm
Where: Watkins Regional Park, Upper Marlboro
Cost: Free!

FRIDAY 

Summer Concert Series – Brett Whitson
Come out and see local and talented musician Brett Whitson perform in Bear Square! (We’ve been to this series. It’s lovely to sit by the benches, watch the bees do their thing with the nearby fragrant plants as you listen to music amidst a perfect sun set. 🙂
When: 6-8pm
Where: Riverdale Park Station, 6621 Baltimore Ave, Riverdale Park

Forklift First Friday
Join us as we stay open late to throw a party with lively entertainment (live Motown music from Ron Hicks Project), fun for all ages, local art, food truck(s) and craft beer & wine. Read my review of family-friendly Community Forklift’s First Friday here!

Opening Reception: The Innate Thread by Kathryn Polk 
Called a “virtuoso lithographer” by Juxtapoz Magazine, Polk’s work is a “wonderful mi of superb draftsmanship, childish play, and printing techniques.” I love checking out these opening receptions; great way to see new art, meet the artists, mingle with neighbors and usually indulge in some reception wine and cheese! 🙂

[POSTPONED}Daughters of the Dust Film Screening
Join us for an evening of ancestral remembrance and Black excellence in film with an outdoor screening and discussion of Julie Dash’s epic independent film Daughters of the Dust.

Where: Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center, 4519 Rhode Island Ave, North Brentwood

[POSTPONED}‘All the Stars’ Outdoor Dance Party

Join us for a dance party under the stars! DJ Stylus spins a special set inspired by motion picture blockbuster The Black Panther and hit single “All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar + SZA. It will be Afrofuturistic vibes all night across a span of genres for the rest of the night.

When: 10pm-2am

Astronomy Star Party!
See the Universe! Visit our observatory, look through club members’ telescopes, or bring your own. Event will be canceled if it’s too cloudy to see any stars. Sponsored by the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt.

Where: Northway Fields Park, Greenbelt (Observatory is at the end of a dirt road)

The City
The City is a pioneering short documentary film from 1939 that contrasts the problems of the contemporary urban environment with the superior social and physical conditions that can be provided in a planned community.When: 1pm

Opening Reception for the Audubon Photography Traveling Exhibit 
The beautiful bird photos featured in Audubon’s 2017 Photography Awards are coming to Watkins Nature Center. Join for light refreshments and take advantage to talk birding and photography wiht members of the Prince George’s Audubon Society.
When: 5-8pm
Where: Watkins Nature Center, 301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro

Community Yoga
