Route One Day Trips: Sandy Point State Park

We know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but warmer weather will be here faster than you know it (groundhog be damned…) and the time will be just right to do a day trip or two from Route 1 and the DC Metro Area. An off-season visit to Sandy Point State Park is a great destination to put on your day trip list.

Day Trip to Sandy Point State Park

While the water won’t be warm enough for swimming, the beach will practically be all yours and the views are just fantastic. And at around a 45-minute drive from the general Hyattsville and College Park area, it’s a fun, quick and easy place to get some outdoor fun without (or without) children.

Sandy Point State Park, Maryland

Quick Day Trip from DC, Route 1 Corridor

We first visited Sandy Point a little over a year ago – in fact, it was an unseasonably warm February day – and had such a great, relaxing time. For this day trip, we brought a picnic, some blankets, beach chairs, shovels, buckets & some friends – you name it. We come prepared. 😄 The kids loved that they basically had a beach to themselves and well, we loved that, too!  🙂

Travel Tip: Visit Sandy Point State Park During Off-Season

Visiting during off-season meant that admission was only $3.00 per vehicle. Major score! Parking was also a breeze (and positioned us just steps from the beach) as there were few cars in the lot. I will note that concessions were not open at the time we went, so prepare accordingly.

Great views of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, easy-going beach, gentle waves, quick drive, $3 admission = put it on your calendar to explore before the summer crowds arrive! (I’m sure it’s lovely then, too – but this post is for an off-season, weekend visit!)
