Sculpting by Chainsaw: University Park’s Yellow-Crowned Night Heron

After passing this sculpture in University Park about 4-5 times a week for the last year or so, I decided to take a moment to read up on its story.

According to this Washington Post article, the “Yellow-crowned night heron chainsaw sculpture was commissioned by [University Park] as an alternative to removing dead trees.” Michael Beal, University Park’s Director of Public Works, shared with me that the great work was done by Don Becker, an artist local to our area.

What an awesome, creative way to incorporate art into our lives. I wonder if this was the same philosophy or purpose behind the Kermit the Frog sculpture (which also appears atop a tree stump and pays homage to Jim Henson, who called University Park home during his younger years)?

If you haven’t seen this latest Don Becker sculpture yet and want to check it out, it’s along the segment of Wells Run that runs between Adelphi Road and University Park Elementary School. As for Kermit, he’s near the walking trail as you head from Wells Run towards Tennyson Street.

Channeling Biggie Smalls: “If you don’t know, now you know.” 😃

Now your turn: What’s your favorite work of art to explore along Route 1? Share in comments! 👏
