Things to Do with Kids this Weekend Along Maryland’s Route One: July 27th-29th

Frolick in the fountain this weekend! 

Explore Lake Allen in Laurel, Splash around in Riverdale Park, get your art on in Hyattsville, take a hike in Greenbelt or maybe some indoor fun with Pinball in College Park! Route One Fun’s Kids’ Weekend Guide is full of answers to your what-to-do-this-weekend questions! 🙂

FRIDAY 

Special Weekday Opening of Lake Allen

Lake will be open for fishing, hiking and nature observation all day long!
When: 8am-4pm
Where: Patuxent Research Refuge, North Tract, Laurel
Cost: Free!

Mt. Rainier Nature Center
Check out some hands-on exhibits, live animals, educational displays, a play area and more at this fun, free, petite, local site. For a sneak peek, read about our time here!
When: 9am-5pm
Where: Mt. Rainier Nature & Recreation Center, 4701 31st Place, Mt. Rainier
Cost: Free!

STEM-Fun at Diven’s Den
Check out this new-to-you STEM-inspired playroom, teaching the kiddos about life in 1800s Laurel. Curious? Read my review of Diven’s Den!
When: 10am-2pm
Where: Laurel Historical Society, 817 Main Street, Laurel
Cost: Free!

Splash around Riverdale Park Station Fountain!
Let the kids cool off and splash around the fountain at RPS (like kiddos pictured above)! Bring some lunch or grab something from one of the local eateries. Can even make it a double-header with some time monkeying around the new & nearby playground at RPS!
When: Sunrise to Sunset
Where: Riverdale Park Station, Riverdale Park
Cost: Free!


SATURDAY 

Toddler Time @ Art Works Now
Open studio time for toddlers and their accompanying adults. Even the youngest children can explore a variety of age-appropriate art materials in a safe, fun environment. What to expect? Read my review of Toddler Time at Art Works Now.
When: 10am-12pm
Where: Art Works Now, 4800 Rhode Island Ave, Hyattsville
Cost: $5

Spanish-English Ready 2 Read Storytime (Ages 3-5)
Stores, fingerplays and songs will be presented in Spanish and English.
When: 11-11:30am
Where: Hyattsville Library, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!

Raptors Reign

All ages. Join special guest and licensed falconer, Rodney Stotts, as he shared the power of nature through discussions and up close encounters with birds of prey. This is a drop-in program, no registration required.
When: 1-3pm
Where: National Wildlife Visitor Center, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel
Cost: Free, donations welcome!

PINBALL!
(Ages 5+)
At time of drafting this, rain is in the forecast for Saturday so including this indoor option for the 5+ crowd (really best for 5+ though all are welcome)! Over 29 pinball machines to choose from! See what fun we had at MOM’s here! 
When: 9am-9pm
Where: MOM’s College Park
Cost: Up to you! (Bring dollars/quarters (they have a change machine). Most games are 50 cents to play.)

SUNDAY 

Indian Creek Playground
Any time this weekend, check out this really fun and creative playground designed after Berwyn Heights’ earliest residents – a group of Algonquian people known as Nacotchtank. Kiddos will have a blast climbing teepees, in an out of canoes and up and down dream catchers. If you get hungry afterwards, check out

Take a Hike! 
Tree canopies make being outside much more bearable, so head to a nearby park and go for a hike! We’ve enjoyed taking hikes at Greenbelt park  *Note: As with any hike, make sure to check for ticks during and after your hike! 🙂 
When: Sunrise to sunset
Where: 6565 Greenbelt Rd, Greenbelt
Cost: Free!

Riding Bicycles to Experience Patuxent Research Refuge’s North Tract
Enjoy an early spring bicycle outing as you learn about the refuge. Experience the beauty of this natural area on two wheels while discovering local wildlife, plants and historical sites.
When: 1-3:30pm
Where: Patuxent Research Refuge, North Tract, Laurel
Cost: Free!
