Things to do this weekend with Route 1 Kids: Be a Nature Detective in Laurel on Friday when the weather’s supposed to be decent; Make some “Clay Creatures” in College Park; Share Your Message of Love & Kindness at DC’s Hirshhorn’s “Martin’s Big Words”; Open Gym in Mount Rainier & more!

Friday

Family Fun: Who Was Here? (All Ages)
Learn about animal tracks, scats & other animal signs in winter through hands-on activities & games. Drop-in program. Be a nature detective today!
When: 10am-1pm
Where: National Wildlife Visitor’s Center, Laurel
Cost: Free! 

Diven’s Den
Enjoy hands-on STEM-inspired learning at the Laurel Historical Society’s Diven’s Den. Play area includes historic kitchen, a simple machine exploration area, craft projects, and more, representing Laurel’s history.
When: 10am-2pm
Where: Laurel Historical Society, Laurel
Cost: Free!

X-treme Teens: Trivia and Treats (Ages 10-17)
Make your own ice cream sundae & compete in a trivia competition for a prize! Sweet treats & surprises await you!
When: 7-9pm
Where: Berwyn Heights School Community Center, Berwyn Heights
Cost: Free! w/ MNCPPC youth ID

Saturday

Meet Dr. King (Ages 4-10)
Saturday Morning Live resumes with this performance that helps young people begin to understand the importance of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement. Travel tips and our time at Saturday Morning Live here!
When: 9:30am & 11am shows
Where: National Theatre, DC
Cost: Free!

Arts Drop-in: Clay Creatures (Ages 3-8)
Drop in, make art & have fun. This month’s activity is clay creatures. Think of all the possibilities! Supplies (and clean-up!) included. Take home your treasure!
When: 10am-12pm
Where: College Park Community Center, College Park
Cost: Free! 

Engineering 101
Learn basic engineering through an interactive, hands-on challenge. Just like engineers, make your own design for plans to prototype. See how far you can go!
When: 11am
Where: College Park Aviation Museum, College Park
Cost: $5/participant, includes museum admission and supplies 

Open Gym (Ages 2-6)
Get ready for a high energy, teacher-led class designed to help your child develop physical movement skills as they become more confident running, jumping, tumbling, and landing on two feet as well as gaining spatial awareness of their bodies.
When: 11:15am-12:45pm
Where: Joe’s Movement Emporium, Mount Rainier
Cost: $10

Teddy Bears Picnic
Fun with stuffed friends continues. 🙂 This time, take them on an indoor picnic & enjoy stories, songs, dances & activities together. A perfect afternoon outing.
When: 3-4pm
Where: Old Parish House, College Park
Cost: Free!

Sunday

FAMILY FUN: Groovy Nate (All Ages)
Come move, sing, & play with a children’s entertainer & Wolf Trap Teaching Artist. Be wow’d by his puppet skits & exotic musical instruments. Purchase tix ahead of time, we hear they sell out!
When: 10:30-11:30am (doors open @ 10am)
Where: Capitol Cider House, Washington, DC
Cost: $5, weekday happy hour prices for adults 

STORYTIME: Martin’s Big Words (All Ages)
Honor Martin Luther King, Jr. Day @ the Smithsonian with your little art lover. View an art installation, read a related story, create a mini-installation of your own! Share your message of love & kindness through “big words”!
When: 11am-12pm
Where: Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC
Cost: Free! 

UMD Gymnastics – Season Opener
The No. 8 Maryland gymnastics team returns home to host Big Ten rival Iowa!
When: 4pm
Where: Xfinity Center, College Park
Cost: Free!

Happenstance Theater: JUXTAPOSE (All Ages)
Join us on a theatrical journey, feel the limitless possibilities of imagination! Highly visual vignettes. Puppetry, physical theatre, theatrical clown & more! Post-show, chat w/ performers, share feedback! Everyone’s welcome (not a kids-only show).
When: 2pm
