Hyattsville Murals “Fight the Blight”

Route 1 in Hyattsville has a number of new, amazingly vibrant murals adorning the facades (and sides & behinds!) of many vacant buildings and they’re beautiful! Green Owl Design and UIP Development, teamed up with local artists to revamp this part of the Route 1 corridor and instantly beautify abandoned buildings that are slated for demolition. 👏  Methinks these awesome Hyattsville murals will totally be a draw to our area similar to how Union Market’s Heart Wall is itself a destination for many folks.

Murals along Hyattsville’s Route 1 Corridor

After seeing so many lovely new murals pop-up on Green Owl Design‘s Instagram feed, I took the young’n out early last week to check scout out these new developments and to attempt some photographs. Just imagine her smiling and patiently posing…. 😉

Since these pics were taken, even more murals have popped up (the side of this building is now a fabulous mural by Studio SoHy and Zunzima (aka Takashi Nakajima) & the opposite wall feature the work of the Green Owl Design team!  I’ll be taking more photos of the latest at this weekend’s Hyattsville Arts & Ales Festival. Happy to share on my Instagram feed.

SoHy Collective

In addition to these new murals, many of the local businesses in this happenin’ area have banded together to create The SoHy Collective. Together, they’re focused on “developing a visual and commercial identity which promotes and supports small businesses and non-profits in the SoHy district of Hyattsville.” (More details about the Collective in this great piece by The Hyattsville Life & Times.)  All this teamwork is just gonna make living, shopping, eating and everything else in our area that much more awesome!

By now, you’ve probably noticed the work that was done to transform the exterior of 5132 Baltimore Ave (home of Tanglewood Works and Three Little Birds Sewing Company) into a sight to behold. My pictures don’t do it justice but here’s a refresher:

Stop by 5334 Baltimore Ave (the “garage” building across from Busboys & Poets) & Green Owl Design will provide you with the tools to spray paint ❤’s and H’s on the building!  So cool!

I want to give a shout out to Dan Simon, owner of 5132 Baltimore Avenue, for supporting the artistic aspirations of his tenants. When Dan told us (Tanglewood Works & Three Little Birds) he planned to repaint the building we asked permission to create our own design and color scheme. With the assistance of local firm, MSR Design, we came up with the pattern adorning our building and there's even more to come…
