Little Free Community Cupboard in University Park

We recently noticed what appeared to be a “Blessing Box” getting ready for its debut on Tuckerman Street close to Route One. (If not familiar, a Blessing Box is an outdoor pantry of sorts, where folks leave donated goods for others in need to pick up anonymously.) We reached out to University Park’s Church of the Brethren‘s (UPCOB) Pastor Kim McDowell, who graciously shared that the new structure is a “Little Free Community Cupboard”; indeed the same basic concept as a Blessing Box.

The Little Free Community Cupboard in University Park is located on the corner of Route 1 & Tuckerman Street (across from the Church of the Brethren).

The UPCOB will soon be posting a list of suggested items to leave/take that will include things like “like diapers, tampons, and personal hygiene items, along with non-perishable foods.” They hope to put a name up on the structure soon and are planning to be ready to go with the initial stock next week.

The Church is reaching out to local elementary schools to help spread the word so that folks with the right connections can point people who might benefit from it in our direction. Speaking of, we’re sure they’d be happy if you, dear Route One Fun reader, helped to spread the word within your network, too.  Pastor McDowell shared her hope that the Little Free Community Pantry “will be adopted by others in the community, and that it will be helpful to those who most need it.”

Help Spread the Good Word!

So, you’ve got your marching orders. Go spread the word to those who may be able to help stock it and to those who may find its ultimate contents helpful. And if you’ve got more than enough to go around, why not also donate what you can to the Blessing Box in Hyattsville?! ❤

Thank you, all!

University Park Elementary School

Thanks to University Park Elementary School for already starting to spread the word! Here’s the announcement they shared translated into Spanish (TY Ms. Sanders!):

  • Alimentos envasados secos o enlatados (nada perecedero)
