Get Movin’ at Joe’s Movement Emporium (+ FREE CLASS!)

All Smiles After the Carribean Vibes Cardio Class!

One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to get movin’ again, plain and simple. Not “get back into shape.” Not “tone up.” Not to get back to pre-baby or pre-whatever weight. Just to get moving again. I have more fun, enjoy life that bit more when I’m moving to some sort of rhythm, which is why I was thrilled when Joe’s Movement Emporium in Mt. Rainier reached out to invite me to check out their new Adult Movement Classes! Their timing was perfect!

From Hip Hop Dance, Caribbean Vibes Cardio, and Salsa to Vinyasa Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi – Joe’s has a wide menu of ways to get movin’! I huffed, puffed and occasionally wheezed my way through a number of the classes just so that I could give you the 411 on what to expect. 😊 As you will see in the photos and videos below, the classes were so much fun for all levels, incredibly affordable and a great way to get movin’ on into 2018! (The speaker (🔊) icon signals the classes that I checked out and gives you my take on why you, too, should check it out!)

**Lucky for you, Joe’s is offering Route One Fun readers the chance to try a class of your choice for free! Go here to register for a class, enter code ROUTE1MOVESIT at checkout through May 31st and voila, your class is free! 👏

💃 Adults’ Movement Classes at Joe’s Movement Emporium 💃

Before I jump to class descriptions, I want to highlight how affordable these classes are, especially as money is often our bottom line. The Joe’s 10-Class Pass gets you 10 classes for $110 (that’s $11/class)(seniors enjoy $80 rate ($8/class)! You can take 10 of the same classes or mix it up. You can also share your class pass so you can bring a friend, neighbor – whomever you wish to join you for some workout fun! Afraid of commitment? Well, first try the class for free using the discount code above. 😊 Then rest happy knowing the drop-in rate is $13/class (senior drop-in: $10).

Vinyasa Yoga with Brooke Kidd
Nurture the harmony of mind and body – work with alignment and awareness, deep stretching and relaxation for a revitalizing experience.
🔊 This class is p.e.r.f.e.c.t. for those new to or reacquainting themselves to yoga. First off, it’s taught by Brooke Kidd, Executive Director of Joe’s, so you know she knows her stuff! 😉 Secondly, the gentle pace of the class really gave me a chance to stretch – which is something that feels so good and which I really don’t do often enough. Having this class as part of my weekly routine would help make that happen! Thirdly, the class is easy to follow as Brooke incorporates poses familiar to anyone who’s ever heard of yoga, like downward-facing dog, warrior’s pose, and cobra pose and then floats modifications to make the pose easier or to allow you to dig deeper.

Practicing the tree pose with Brooke Kidd!

Gentle Yoga
Similar to above – excellent class for beginners to yoga, those with limited mobility or recently recovering from an injury.

Inferno Pilates
Pilates meets circuit training in this high intensity, low impact, interval-training, workout.

🔊 I was nervous at first about this class; anything with the word “inferno” in its title makes me sweat! 😉 Inferno, however, refers to the high-intensity interval-style of the class that will get your heart rate moving – not the temperature of the class! It’s amazing how such small movements can really get your muscles burning! Instructor Tyecia Powell was so good at modifying movements and mixing the moves up every two minutes was just the right amount of time to feel the burn without collapsing from exhaustion! Check out this post-class video recapping some of our fave moves! 🙂
Hip Hop Dance
Dancers will explore hip hop and street jazz movements along with various street styles at a challenging, yet suitable pace.
🔊 Come with skillz, come with no skillz (like me…) & you’ll have a blast! Instructor Kendra Johnson knows a thing or two about dance – she’s trained in ballet, modern dance, hip hop and African Dance! 👏 I’ve joked before that my dance moves look more like those of Tina Fey than Rhianna, but Kendra managed to break down some mighty intimidating moves into pieces that me and the ladies could manage. She keeps an eye out for folks like me who are clearly new to the moves and will patiently go through the routine again until we get the hang of it – or at least something close!  We had a blast learning the moves and are all encouraged to check Hip Hop Dance out again!
Caribean Vibes Cardio

Caribbean Vibes Cardio is a perfect for Caribbean Dance and Music Lovers. Easy to follow high energy steps focusing on cardio and toning all to the best Dancehall, Soca, Afro Beat music and dances!

🔊 I was super-excited for this class but made sure I stayed near the exit – in case me and my moves needed to escape! 😆 No escape necessary though as instructor Erica Rae did a great job of demonstrating the moves and adjusting the music to fit our collective speed. I love dancehall music so getting the chance to actually learn some legit moves (Willie Bounce, Wacky Dip anyone?!!) was so cool! Curious? Just use the free code and do it! 🙂

Beginner Salsa
Progressive beginner level class is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the rich culture of salsa music and dance. Classes will begin with body movement/isolation warm up exercises to release tension and get you moving comfortably and confidently to Latin rhythms. A great opportunity to learn and refine your social dance skills in a safe, friendly, fun and exciting environment.
Tai Chi
Take it slow and enjoy the movement through the study of Tai Chi Chun long form. Instructor Normon Greene is a student and teacher of Tai Chi Chaun long form for over 40 years. He has taught Tai Chi to youth, adults and families in Montgomery County and in youth services.
