There’s a new mural in town – this time just above Nando’s Peri-Peri in College Park! This vibrant new public art just off the Route 1 corridor features native Maryland species including Baltimore’s Checkerspot Butterfly, Black-eyed Susan and a Diamondback Terrapin. (Notice, too, its incorporation of the Maryland flag’s gold, black, white and red colors.)
The College Park City University Partnership College commissioned the mural, selecting Hyattsville’s own Cory L. Stowers, Jason Philp and their skilled team to create it. (Cory was one of the artists behind the bright, colorful mural at the West Hyattsville Metro, by the bye.) More details on the mural in the presser, copied below.
New Mural in College Park
“The mural, installed with funding from the Prince George’s County Redevelopment Authority and the City of College Park’s façade grant program, was completed by local artists Cory L. Stowers and Jason Philp. Both artists are from Hyattsville, Maryland, and painted the mural to completion with the help of their team in just under one month. The mural features native Maryland species including the Checkerspot Butterfly, Black-eyed Susan and Terrapin. For more than 100-years, College Park has been planting the seeds of conservation. This mural is an ode to the contributions made by the city and
university, toward protecting our environment. The mural honors the role of pollination in our ecosystem, with the aim of drawing attention to the plight of the Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly.”
Join Celebration of Downtown College Park Mural
To mark the occasion, the College Park City-University Partnership invites local business owners, the artists, local officials, and community members for a celebration of the Downtown College Park Mural, helping to raise awareness of an endangered species with Maryland ties through public art. The celebration will be on Thursday, November 7th at 10:00 a.m. at the corner of Knox Rd. and Baltimore Ave., directly across the street from Nando’s Peri-Peri, College Park, Maryland.
(Must say – between this mural and the Bespectacled Woman one below it by Kilmaney-Jo Liversage, Nando’s certainly does surround itself with beautiful art!)
