Pyramid’s Book Arts Fair kicks off Friday!

Get a head start on planning your weekend, Route One! Pyramid Atlantic’s Book Arts Fair kicks off with a fun party Friday evening, Saturday will see the unveiling of the “Couriers to Congress” highway marker in Hyattsville, bidding and revelry at University Park Elementary School PTA’s Silent Auction, First Friday: #BlackGirlMagic in North Brentwood, Us & Us Only in College Park, Tour de Brew & so much more, all below!

THURSDAY 

Mixed Monologues featuring Elizabeth Acevedo 
TOTUS Spoken Word Experience’s annual Mixed Monologues program will take place during the Critical Mixed Race Studies Conference. Elizabeth Acevedo’s poetry is infused with her Dominican parents’ bolero and her beloved city’s tough grit.
When: 6pm
Where: MilkBoy ArtHouse, 7416 Baltimore Ave, College Park
Cost: Free 

Liberated Muse’s First Performance of 2018
An eclectic troupe of professional artists presenting progressive music, theatre and spoken word performance representing the African diaspora.
When: 8-11pm 
Where: Busboys and Poets, Hyattsville
Cost: $5 admission

Songwriters’ Association of Washington – Open Mic & Featured Artist Showcase
A new featured artist will perform at 8pm – the features are some tried and true songwriter’s, working on their craft and sharing their gifts to inspire all.
When: 8pm
Where: New Deal Cafe, Greenbelt
Cost: Free (no entry fee)

FRIDAY 

First Friday: #BlackGirlMagic Edition 
Come and enjoy a night of music, dancing, networking, art and more! Distinctly Creative is committed to a vision of promoting and advocating for black creatives and entrepreneurs, and being the go-to platform for those looking to broaden their skill sets, network with other like-minded individuals, and connect their brand/business with the overall community.
When: 6-9pm
Where: Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center, 4519 Rhode Island Avenue North Brentwood
Cost: Free (suggested donation: $5)

Pyramid Atlantic’s 14th Biennial Book Arts Fair – Preview Party
This Book Arts Fair – a three day event connects artists, printers, collectors, graphic designers, art lovers and the simply curious – kicks off with a preview party at the exhibit hall! Meet up and mingle with the artists and book arts community with DJ Laura Lopez!
When: 7-10pm 
Where: Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, 4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville 
Cost: Free!

Us and Us Only, Pet, Chaz Monroe, DOKI DOKI JEFF
Us and Us Only formed as a trio in Baltimore around 2009. After self-releasing four EPs that vary between acoustic arrangements to a warped vision of indie rock featuring chopped and sampled vocals alongside more dense and distorted soundscapes, the band has settled into a groove that manages to distill all of those sounds into their first LP, Full Flower. (Gave Us & Us a listen, shoegazer-y, definitely a band to check out!)
When: Doors 7:30pm

SATURDAY 

College Park ParkRun
Head out on for a weekly, free, 5K, timed run. Afterwards, enjoy a post parkrun coffee in The Board & Brew, College Park. All ages welcome!
When: Saturdays at 9 a.m.

Admission: Free but please register before your first run.

Meditation
When: 9:10-9:45am

Pyramid Atlantic’s 14th Biennial Book Arts Fair 
Fair continues with your choice of 17 lectures/demonstrations and 40 exhibitors. 
When: Kicks off at 9:30am and runs until 6pm (see site for full schedule)
Where: Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, 4318 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville (& around town – see link) 
Cost: Weekend tickets range from $10-50 and are free to any Prince George’s County student. 
Unveiling of Highway Marker Commemorating Suffrage Procession Along Route 1
As noted in my post here, suffragettes around the county gathered in Hyattsville ahead of their final procession to the Hill to present 75,000 signed petitions to US Senators considering granting women the right to vote. Join this unveiling of a highway marker commemorating the spot where they rallied! 

When: 10am
Where: 4666 Rhode Island Ave (Melrose Park (where skate park is located));
**According to an email from the City of Hyattsville: Free parking and shuttle service will be available at the County Building, 4990 Rhode Island Avenue, through the entrance on 43rd Avenue.

6th Annual CPCL Book Festival

Stop by and grab a book, chat with an author and illustrator! Buy books, get autographs & more!   

When: 11am-2pm
Where: College Park Community Center, 5051 Pierce Ave, College Park
Cost: Free!

Tour de Brew! 
We’re going to check out local breweries by bike! What could be more social? We’re working on a new route, so stay tuned. We’ll try to hit 3-4 breweries. Bring ID, lock, cash/cc, ID. Check back here for any updates ahead of ride.
When: 11:30am-3:30pm

Cost: Free! 

Boot Camp in Bear Square 
Gold’s Gym is offering free boot camp in Bear Square (by Whole Foods Market). Get ready to sweat!
When: 1-2pm

Cost: Free! 
Zumba w/ Amy & Chantal
Enjoy this awesome Zumba class taught by local instructors Chantal Ross & Amy Boccardi – who’ll both have you with a smile on your face as you dance your cares away!

UPES PTA Silent Auction

Join neighbors, friends, family and everyone in between as we bid away on items like wine tasting for 8, a night at UMD’s The Hotel, kids activities, camps and more! $10 donation includes food, drinks, live music and great fun! 
When: 6-9pm
Where: Wallace Presbyterian Church, 3725 Metzerott Rd, College Park 
Cost: $10 entry 

SUNDAY

Make Do and Mend: A Free Drop-in Sewing Class 
Make Do and Mend was a pamphlet issued by the British Ministry of Information in the midst of WWII. It was intended to provide useful tips on how to be both frugal and stylish in times of harsh rationing. Bring in fabric items that are torn, abused or otherwise damaged and learn to repair them with the guidance of a professional sewer.
When: 12-3pm 
Where: Community Forklift, 4671 Tanglewood Dr., Hyattsville 
Cost: Free!

The Doomed Battalion
As Old Greenbelt Theatre enters it’s 80th year, we’re celebrating by looking back at some of the great films watched here by Greenbelters 80 years ago! All in 35mm, all free!

Revolutionary Sistahs!
This show tells the stories of unsung African and African American Sheroes who fought and sacrificed their lives, their bodies, but not their souls in the neverending fight for freedom. We will tell the stories through dance, song and spoken word, of the slave girls Anarcha, Betsy and Lucy, of Sistahs against Apartheid, of West African women & girls against female excision and everyday Sheroes. (I saw these women practice; they are fantastic!)When: 3-5pm

Community Yoga

An off-the-cuff evening of bluegrass and country classics with some of the area’s finest pickers
