Summer is in full swing, and there are so many ways to celebrate the season around Route One. It’s a bargain hunters dream this weekend with a Bear Square Book Sale on Friday and two community yard sales on Saturday. Music lovers are also in for a treat with live music all weekend at local pubs and the Washington Folk Festival just a short drive away at Glen Echo Park. Families can celebrate the beginning of Pride Month at the Smithsonian or learn about the colonial history of ice cream (and eat some, too!) at Darnall’s Chance in Upper Marlboro.

Hyattsville Library Ready 2 Read Storytime (ages 3-5)

Trekking the Tarmac: Tour of the College Park Airport (ages 6+)
You’ve walked inside an airport but have you ever wanted to walk on the runway? Take a guided, outside walking tour of the College Park Airport. This is the oldest continuously operating airport in the world. Learn about the many “firsts” that happened at the Airport and how the Airport is used today. This event doesn’t specify an age range, but note that you must be able to walk for at least an hour on uneven, outside surfaces, so it’s probably best for ages 6 and up. Advance registration is required.

This one is a bit of a hike from Route One, but it seems worth the trip. After two years of hiatus, the Washington Folk Festival returns to Glen Echo Park to celebrate its 40th anniversary. There will be a splendid array of music, captivating storytellers, and a marketplace filled with talented artisans, and almost everything will be outdoors. Listen to bands performing American roots music like bluegrass and county, plus a huge range of international music, including reggae and flamenco. Parking on-site is limited, so take advantage of the free festival shuttle from free satellite parking in the GEICO parking lot located at 5260 Western Avenue, Chevy Chase, just a few blocks from the Friendship Heights Metro station. (Or take Metro and catch the shuttle from the GEICO lot.)
