Route 1 Kids Weekend Guide April 15-17

Celebrate 50 years of these cuties at the National Zoo this weekend.

With spring break in full swing and Easter this weekend, a lot of Route 1 families are headed out of town, so it’s a little quiet in the events department. For those staying around, there are still some great activities to check out, including egg hunts in College Park and Bladensburg and a celebration of Giant Pandas at the National Zoo in D.C.

FRIDAY

Hyattsville Library Ready 2 Read Storytime (ages 3-5)
Bring your preschooler and enjoy stories, songs, fingerplays, and more at the brand new Hyattsville Library. The story time will be held outdoors, but be sure to stop inside to see the new space while you’re there.
When: 10:30-11 am
Where: Hyattsville Library
Cost: FREE!

Basketball Hot Shot (ages 10-17)
Score the most points from assigned spots on the court! The player with highest score will be crowned champion until next time.
When: 7-10 pm
Where: Prince George’s Plaza Community Center, Hyattsville
Cost: FREE!

S.T.E.A.M Night Lego Building (ages 10-17)
Challenge yourself and get creative with building different Lego models.
When: 7-10 pm
Where: Langley Park Community Center
Cost: FREE!

SATURDAY

Hyattsville Library Spanish-English Ready 2 Read Storytime (ages 3-5)
Bring the tots for stories, fingerplays, and songs in Spanish and English for ages 3-5.
When: 12:30-1 pm
Where: Hyattsville Library
Cost: FREE!

Bladensburg EGGSTRAVAGANZA (all ages)
Bring your basket and hop on over to Bladensburg for prizes, games, music, raffles and an egg hunt for the family. Be sure to sign up in advance.
When: 10 am to 12 pm
Where: David C. Harrington Park, Bladensburg
Cost: FREE! (register in advance on the website)

College Park Egg-ceptional Egg Hunt (ages 0-12)
The city of College Park invites Route 1 families to enjoy a morning of egg hunting, live music, hot cocoa, coffee (for the parents), and prizes. Get your picture taken with Peter Cottontail, enjoy a kids concert, or make a craft with the College Park Arts Exchange. The egg hunts will be organized by age groups, so be sure to register in advance for your preferred time slot. And don’t forget your basket!
When: 10 am to 12 pm (egg hunting begins at 10:30 or 11:30 am, depending on age)
Where: Duvall Field, College Park
Cost: FREE! (register in advance on the website)

Kid’s Paint Party (ages 6-16)
Let your kids get creative at this spring-themed paint party. Ticket includes a guided painting party, snacks, juice, and kids music. All materials will be included for kids to make an 11×14 painting.
When: 12-2 pm

Allen Pond Park, Bowie
Cost: $25

Pandaversary Party at the National Zoo (all ages)
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute and Chinese partners have been saving giant pandas for 50 years and it’s time to celebrate! Partygoers can enjoy special treats from the Chinese Embassy, lion dance performances, live music, panda-themed food specials, and the world premiere of Smithsonian Channel’s “The Miracle Panda.”
When: 8 am to 1:45 pm on Saturday and 1-3:30 pm on Sunday

FREE!

SUNDAY

 Orchester Prazevica
Stop by New Deal Cafe for a performance of high energy dance music drawing on the tradition of Eastern European Czardas and Gypsy Swing, but widely influenced by jazz and blues. Under the direction of Slovak born and raised guitarist and singer, Tomáš Drgon, this band delivers a unique, authentic and entertaining blend of musical traditions.
When: 6-8 pm
Where: New Deal Cafe, Greenbelt
Cost: FREE! (minimum $10 tip for performers is suggested)
