Kids’ Weekend Guide: Nov. 3rd-5th

Happy Weekend, Folks! Many fun Maryland STEM Festival events to check out as well as a Rocket Celebration, Bibliobop Dance Party, outdoor fun at Lake Artemesia, the Words Beats & Life Festival & more!

FRIDAY

Storytime PopUp! @ The Waterhole
Join us for stories, songs, fingerplays and more at this innovation collaboration between PGCMLS & Mt. Rainier’s fabulous organic juice & smoothie joint, The Waterhole. Best for 0-5 years old. Curious? Click here for my review of The Waterhole!

STEAM Fest 2017: Waste to Wonderful
Explore how waste from farms becomes useful products by doing hands-on experiments. Discover many different uses of farm bi-products from bio-gas to bio-plastics to compost.
When: 2-3pm
Where: Old Maryland Farm, Watkins Regional Park, Upper Marlboro

Lake Artemesia
Get outside and go for a stroll or a bike ride or a slow but enjoyable crawl along lovely Lake Artemesia! Last time we went, spotted some turtles, frogs, ducks & birds of all stripes, beautiful lilipads & more!
When: Sunrise to sunset
Where: Berwyn Rd & 55th Ave, Berwyn Heights

Bibliobop Dance Party 
Calling all Preschoolers and Toddlers! Bust a move and shake your sillies out at the Bibliobop Dance Party. Bring your parents or caregivers and prepare to boogie and bop until we all drop!
When: 3-4pm
Where: Laurel Library, Laurel
Cost: Free!

STEAM Teen Bath Bomb Bonanza
Experience the beautiful side of science! Get ready for some bubble-licious bath bomb bliss! You are guaranteed to enjoy this workshop as you learn to make bath bombs that look and smell great! Call to register: 301-441-2647.

Where: College Park Community Center, 5051 Pierce Avenue, College Park

SATURDAY

Military Appreciation Humvee
Join our hands-on workshop where you and your child can build a custom wooden humvee to honor all those that have served our country. Tips: (1) Get there early as supplies do run out; (2) These workshops can be loud so if your child is sensitive to noise, plan accordingly.

When: 9 am – 12 pm

Toddler Time @ Art Works Now
Open studio time for toddlers and their accompanying adults. Even the youngest children can explore a variety of age-appropriate art materials in a safe, fun environment. What to expect? Read my review of Toddler Time at Art Works Now.

STEM for Families: Construction for Kids

Ages 5-12. Join us for open and structured building with a variety of materials, including Legos and Duplos.

Spanish-English Ready 2 Read Storytime (Ages 3-5)
Stories, Fingerplays, and songs will be presented in Spanish and English.

Kid Koders
Ages 5-12. Learn coding basis through a tailored curriculum of game-based activities that will challenge creative and logical skills while teaching core concepts of computer science and programming. Read all about why we ❤ Laurel Library, here!

Greenbelt Observatory Star Party
Explore the heavens with us at Greenbelt Observatory through the telescopes of members of the Astronomical Society of Greenbelt and the Goddard Astronomy Club, and through the observatory’s large telescope with its astronomical video camera. (Weather permitting.)
When: 7 – 9 pm
Where: Northway Rd. (at end, next to James Wolfe Field), Greenbelt
Admission: Free!


Xtreme Teens: Celebrate Chemistry Week (Ages 10-17) 

What do you get when you cross a boulder with a bag of Jolly Ranchers™? Rock Candy, of course!! Now, join us in the laboratory to concoct your own version of rock candy as we celebrate Chemistry Week.

When: 7-10pm
Where: Beltsville Community Center, Beltsville

SUNDAY

Watkins Regional Park Playground

This. Place. Is Awesome. Truly awesome Wizard of Oz-themed playground where you literally follow the yellow brick road under a rainbow arch as the Scarecrow shows you the way to your choice of six fun areas: Dorothy’s Farm House, Munchkin Land, the Emerald Forest, the Emerald City of Oz, the Balloon Escape, the Ruby Red Shoes. Playground, nature center and farm are free to explore and enjoy!
When: 9 am – 6 pm
Where: 301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro
Admission: Free!

Words Beats & Life Festival: Top Notch B-boy & B-girl Competition and Fine Lines Paint Jam
Ok, so this is not near Route 1 but it sounds awesome, is in DC and is free so including in this lineup! Watch as leading b-boys and b-girls from around the country defy the laws of gravity and compete for cash prizes, while legendary DJ’s spin the hottest tracks.
When: 12pm
Where: Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, 2700 F Street NW, WDC
Cost: Free!

Saturn V Moon Rocket 50th Anniversary Celebation
Celebrate the moon rocket which still remains the most powerful launch vehicle yet to leave the Earth’s atmosphere with this display and launch models of the Saturn V Rocket. A free Saturn V 50th Anniversary Commemorative hand-out, detailing the rocket’s characteristics, will be available
When: 1-3pm
Where: NASA Goddard Visitor Center, Greenbelt
Cost: Free!
