Glitterfest Brentwood Arts Exchange

WEEKEND FUN! Lots of great ways to have fun with the kids this weekend along Route 1! Oh, there’s Glitterfest, Live Musical Performance by Barry Louis Polisar, Jitterbug Club, Trot for a Turkey & more! Take a look inside and share with a friend! As always – but especially in times of inclement weather – be sure to contact the event to confirm its status before heading out!

FRIDAY 

Mt. Rainier Nature Center
Check out some hands-on exhibits, live animals, educational displays, a play area and more at this fun, free, petite, local site. For a sneak peek, read about our time here! (Tip: Build in some time to check out The Waterhole in Mt. Rainier. Great, local organic juice spot. Kid-friendly, too!)

Music Class w/ Music Together SoHy – Free Demo!
Check out this new music class for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and the grownups who love them! Little ones love playing along in class and caregivers love being a part of their children’s growth into confident music-makers! Register for a free demo class!
When: 9:30-10:15am
Where: University Christian Church, 6800 Adelphi Rd, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!

Storytime PopUp! @ The Waterhole
Join us for stories, songs, fingerplays and more at this innovation collaboration between PGCMLS & Mt. Rainier’s fabulous organic juice & smoothie joint, The Waterhole. Best for 0-3 years olds as space can be tight. Curious? Click here for my review of The Waterhole!

Cost: Free (Heads-up: Waterhole’s menu is delish, highly recommend indulging!)

STEM-Fun at Diven’s Den
Check out this new-to-you STEM-inspired playroom, teaching the kiddos about life in 1800s Laurel. Curious? Read my review of Diven’s Den!

SATURDAY 

 

Toddler Time @ Art Works Now
Open studio time for toddlers and their accompanying adults. Even the youngest children can explore a variety of age-appropriate art materials in a safe, fun environment. What to expect? Read my review of Toddler Time at Art Works Now. (New to the area? Pre-game Toddler Time with a delish morning coffee at Hyattsville’s Vigilante Coffee, walking distance to AWN and then to adjacent Pizzeria Paradiso for lunch!)
When: 10am-12pm

Kids’ Music – Barry Louis Polisar Live at Old Greenbelt Theatre

You know that song from Juno, If I was a flower growing wild and free, all I’d want is you to be my sweet honey bee”? Well, the singer – Barry Louis Polisar – is doing a kids performance at OGT today!
When: 11am-1pm
Where: Old Greenbelt Theatre, Greenbelt
Cost: $5 kids; $7 adults

Jitterbug Club (Ages 2-6)
New class! Kiddos 2-6 will love this open play date filled with movement, music and fun (taught by Kendra and Marcel, 2 instructors at Joe’s who are SOOOO good with kids and who the kiddos love!)
When: 11:15am-12:45pm
Where: Joe’s Movement Emporium, Mt. Rainier
Cost: $10 drop-in.

Thanksgiving Glitterfest 
A FREE one-day workshop for young artists and families to decorate sparkling centerpieces with glitter for their Thanksgiving table.
When: 2-4pm
Where: Brentwood Arts Exchange, 3901 Rhode Island Ave, Brentwood
Cost: Free!

6th Annual Festival of Lights Trot for a Turkey
For more than 30 years visitors to the annual Winter Festival of Lights have been dazzled by twinkling light displays as they drove through Watkins Regional Park. This year, register to walk or run through the 3.1 mile course and see the dazzling displays up close. Your registration fee will provide a family in need with a holiday turkey. (Fellow Route One Fun reader has done this before and raves about how cool it is!)
When: 6-9pm
Where: Watkins Regional Park, Upper Marlboro
Cost: $30/person

SUNDAY 

Smaland at College Park’s Ikea
Kids play in indoor playground while yo enjoy some shopping or just relax/eat/peoplewatch at the restaurant upstairs. Kiddos must be potty trained and be 37” to 54” tall (so children typically b/w ages of 3-7). Tips: (1) Best to arrive earlier on in the day as day progresses, so do the entrances lines; & (2) Join Ikea Family & kids get extra 30 minutes to play (depending on capacity) & you get free mildly-decent coffee!
When: 10:30am – 7pm
Where: 10100 Baltimore Avenue, College Park
Admission: Free!

Arts Drop-In at MilkBoy ArtHouse – Crazy Collage
When: 11am-1pm
Where: MilkBoy ArtHouse, College Park
Cost: Free (bring some money for brunch!)
