Vigil for George Floyd Today (6/4) in Hyattsville

11:18am update: In case of inclement weather, vigil will be rescheduled.

Many local faith leaders are hosting a vigil for George Floyd this Thursday, June 4th, from 7-7:30pm at the University Christian Church on the corner of Adelphi Road and Belcrest Road in Hyattsville, Maryland. As the registration page notes, the vigil will “make space for prayer, witness, and silence as we stand together for 9 minutes, the length of time former Officer Chauvin applied lethal pressure to Mr. Floyd. We will hear stories of families who have experienced negative encounters with police and invite us to consider concrete actions that can move us toward racial justice.”

Vigil for George Floyd

“On Thursday (6/4) night, Hyattsville area faith communities, leaders, and neighbors are gathering for a brief, non-violent demonstration of solidarity with George Floyd and other victims of racial terror. Our time together will make space for prayer, witness, and silence as we stand together for 9 minutes, the length of time former Officer Chauvin applied lethal pressure to Mr. Floyd. We will hear stories of families who have experienced negative encounters with police and invite us to consider concrete actions that can move us toward racial justice.

When: June 4, 7:00 PM-7:30 PM
Where: University Christian Church, corner of Adelphi Rd and Belcrest Ave, Hyattsville, MD (outside)

Please wear a facemask and observe safe social distancing guidelines. Handheld signs only.

Limited parking available behind the church building and along Adelphi Street. **Please walk, ride your bicycle, or ride share over if you are available due to limited parking.**

In case of inclement weather, the vigil will be rescheduled and/or moved online.

Let us know if you plan to attend this peaceful gathering. You will receive an email with a link to action items that we will share at the vigil.

If you are unable to attend, you may still join us in a time of prayer from your home. If you register, we will send you the link to action items.”

Another posting about this vigil suggests: “You may want to bring a mat or blanket to kneel on.  Although some of us will not choose to, or be able to kneel, your presence is welcomed in any case.”
Register for the vigil using the Google Form here.
