Route 1’s Kids Weekend Guide is up! 2 Nutcracker performances to choose from (or do both!); free Music Together Classes in Hyattsville, Quilt + Learn Family Day in North Brentwood, Trilingual (ASL, English & Spanish!) Santa at Streetcar 82, Lights on the Bay & more!

Friday

Music Together Demo Class (Ages 0-5)

Waterhole Storytime Pop-Up (Ages 0-5)
Let the library come to you! Enjoy stories, music & movement w/ local librarians @ the juice bar. Make it a treat for everyone, order fresh juice! We love the Berry Nice!

December Paint Night Party @ Sweet Frog (All Ages w/ Accompanying Adult)
What a fab idea! Make holiday art, celebrate w/ fro-yo! Art supplies, painting instructions & yogurt included! Grown-ups & kids welcome. 3 person min to hold this event, tell your friends!
When: 5-7pm

Free Holiday Indoor Movie – The Grinch (2018) (All Ages)
Let’s enjoy a holiday movie together! Brought to you by Parks & Rec. Concessions are all just $1. The holiday season wouldn’t be complete without this tale!

Xtreme Teens: Holiday Cooking Class (Ages 10-17)
Calling all teen chefs! Make a festive meal that consists of peppermint bark, chili con carne & refreshing apple cider. Register today for this cooking event, spaces are limited! Call 301-354-2808.

Saturday Morning Live! at National Theatre – The Nutcracker
It’s a National Theatre holiday tradition: selections from Tchaikovsky’s iconic ballet performed by the Virginia Ballet Company and School. Check out our time at this free National Theatre series here!
When: 9:30am & 11am shows
Where: The National Theatre, DC
Cost: Free! (Register for tickets)

Winter Walk: Skunk Cabbage Blooms! (All Ages)
Embrace the cold w/ a hike through the woods led by a Naturalist. Search for skunk cabbage blooms! Amazing plants that can live to age 20 & activate their superpowers to bloom in winter! Wow!
When: 10am-12pm
Where: Patuxent River Park, Upper Marlboro
Cost: $3

Quilt + Learn Family Day (All Ages)
Family fun w/ fabric, stitching & quilting. Make blocks for a quilt & solve the quilt scavenger hunt. Storytime, ornament-making & sewing kit to create projects at home! Hot cocoa (while supplies last) & tour the quilting exhibit. Fun for all!
When: 11am-4pm
Where: Prince George’s African American Museum & Cultural Center, North Brentwood

Trilingual Santa! (ASL, Spanish, & English)
Whether it’s ASL, Spanish or English you speak, Santa’s got you covered at this event! Get your cameras ready for photos w/ elves, revel in holiday cheer w/ libations (for adults) & snacks from Taqueria Habanero!
When: 12-3pm
Where: Streetcar 82 Brewing Co., Hyattsville
Cost: Free!, drinks & quesadillas for sale! 

Gingerbread House Holiday Hullabaloo (All Ages)
Build your very own gingerbread house at this annual event. Reservations are full, yes, but we hear they’ll accommodate a limited number of drop-ins. Won’t know unless you try! (And if you don’t make it in – head to Streetcar! See above.) Bring an unwrapped gift for community children.
When: 12-4pm
Where: ArtWorks Now, Hyattsville
Cost: Free! 

Holiday Hayrides Through the Festival of Lights (All Ages)
Winter hayride w/ Old Maryland Farm staff. Check out the holiday lights, see live animals, enjoy hot cider & cookies by the fire. Limited space, save a spot, call 301-218-6770 & don’t forget to bundle up!
When: 7pm
Where: Watkins Regional Park, Upper Marlboro

The New Deal Nut: A Greenbelt Nutcracker
Support local dancers as they present their take on a holiday classic. Set in Greenbelt past & present, this version of the Nutcracker features a range of dance styles & costumes performed by a talented cast of local youth dancers!
When: 11am, 3pm
Where: Greenbelt Community Center, Greenbelt
Cost: $5 

Meet Santa (& Marshall!) @ the Firehouse
Grab your camera & head over to the fire department for an excursion w/ Santa. Meet the firehouse pup & enjoy cookies. Best to rsvp here & arrive before 2pm. Updates shared on the firehouse’s Facebook page. Park at the PG Plaza metro (free!) & walk over. Your best bet!
When: 11am-3pm
Where: Hyattsville Volunteer Fire Department, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!, consider making a donation to HVFD!

Gun Safety Family Workshop
Let’s talk about gun safety & ways to prevent gun violence. Event open to all families & brought to you by the Hyattsville PD & Tired Parents. Art activity & snacks. Little ones welcome, but might be best for kindergartners+ Read here

Lights on the Bay 
Support the SPCA & enjoy a two-mile scenic drive along the Chesapeake Bay w/ dozens of illuminated holiday displays! Kids can participate in a night scavenger hunt & enter a drawing to win prizes!
When: 5-10pm
Where: Sandy Point State Park, Annapolis
Cost: $20/car, discount coupons are available through local publications & at many retail locations
