Readers Theater: Blackout Poetry (Ages 5-12)
Check out this cool library event. Your kid’s a poet, but maybe you don’t even know it? (haha!). Well, bring them to the Hyattsville Branch Library on Friday afternoon and find out. Staff will help children make poetry using old books and creative editing. Who knows, your child might become the next poet laureate (ahem, and when they do, don’t forget to mention Route One Fun!) 🙂

National Cherry Blossom Festival
Before the weekend tourist crowd rushes in, head downtown with the kiddos to take in the beauty of the cherry blossom trees in full bloom as part of the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival.

Saturday Fun Along Route 1
Town of Edmonston’s Spring Festival (All Ages)
Celebrate Arbor Day with the planting of chestnut trees @ the Edmonston Recreation Center, then hop over to the egg hunt at the 47th Avenue park, for the Easter bunny, treats, and more!

Route 1 Mamas & Papas: Finding & Building Community
Brunch with Bunny (All Ages, limited to 200 guests due to space constraints.)
A special invitation to eat brunch with Mr. Bunny, himself, for moi? Say what? Yep! Be one of the first 200 guests (register here – it’s free!) to enjoy free refreshments, arts and crafts AND a magic show from 11:15-NOON with Tim Hall at the College Park Community Center. Don’t forget to get your munchkins dressed up for a photo op with Mr. Bunny. Say cheese (or maybe carrot ;)!

Family Art Day: Elena & Los Fulanos (All Ages)
In the mood for some soothing melodies and inventive chords to celebrate diversity? Well, come be inspired by the music of Elena & Los Fulanos, a DC-based bilingual Latin folk band, just in time for spring at the Langley Park Community Center. Music is influenced by lead performer Elena Lacayo’s experience growing up in two cultures – Nicaraguan and American. Think twangy folk rock meets violin-infused cumbia.

Stock up on clothing, toys, books, and gear for children of all ages. Take what you need, bring a friend (or more!) and a big bag (or the Swap will provide you with bags) to take home your goodies. Creative Saturday: The Greatest Show on Earth Experience (Ages 6-12, w/ adult)
Looking for a new creative way to stimulate your kids? This Saturday afternoon let them discover the magic of circus through dance, tumbling, and cool props with a talented local artist at Joe’s Movement Emporium. Don’t forget to dress your kids in comfortable clothes, including sneakers and bright colors. This time, YOUR kids really are the greatest show on earth, I mean for reals, yo 🙂

Patuxent Research Refuge
Even when there’s not a specific program to check out, this place is still a good morning/afternoon’s spent exploring the exhibits, taking your pick of any of the activities on the “Family Adventure Cart” including an Adventure Backpack, Scavenger Hunt, Bug Kits, Field Guides, etc. My review of Patuxent Research Refuge here!

Feed the Ducks, Run Around Playground at University Hills Duck Pond Park
The title pretty much says it all. 😉 Pack a picnic, check out the duck pond and then have fun at 1 of the 3 playgrounds at this park! There’s one right at the entrance off of Wells Blvd but if you wander a bit on the bike path you’ll find there’s an even bigger one just down to the right with structures for the toddler and 5-12 crew.

In the mood for some family-friendly brunch? Spring into Spring: Open Hearth Cooking (All Ages)
Catch some 18th and 19th century cooking demos led by The Riversdale Kitchen Guild, using produce harvested at the Guild’s garden. Feature recipes include early spring vegetables and light fare, mmm. Take home a new (or old!) recipe and cooking technique. Tip: While there, ask about joining the Guild’s volunteer corps and you’ll really be making history! (get it? MAKING history: growing veggies, cooking 1800s recipes on an open hearth? okay, back to our weekend activities again). LOL
