Headed down to Busboys and Poets in Hyattsville this morning to do some movin’ and groovin’ with my lil lady at Rise + Rhyme. Every Monday morning from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m, this fun, weekly program promises to get the kiddos (usually best for those 5 years old and younger though any age welcomed) moving and entertained with interactive storytelling and musical performances.
Rise + Rhyme at Hyattsville’s Busboys & Poets
This morning’s featured performer, Jessica “Culture Queen” Smith and her awesome, gold glittery shoes (actually, everything about her – visually and performance-wise, was super) captured our attention with catchy, original tunes that were super easy to sing along to and whose empowering, self-affirming messages were lovely to hear and recite.
It being Hispanic Heritage Month, the Culture Queen gathered the children around on the floor and started the program with a reading of a book called, “Tito Puente, King of Mambo.”
Storytime at Rise + Rhyme
Ushering in the fall season, all of the kiddos then got a chance to share some thoughts on what ingredients they would add to a creative recipe for pumpkin soup. Kids and adults alike also got a chance to dance around and make some music with tambourines and shakers shared by the Culture Queen.
Different Performers Each Week
On another occasion, The Great Zucchini performed much to the kids’ delight! Dude is entertaining and his humorous schtick appeals to some of the older, say 2-8 year old crowd. Definitely check him out when he’s at Rise + Rhyme.
Music & Movement
The Rise + Rhyme program is such a great offering in this community. Your kiddo gets some meaningful, musical, energetic entertainment, you get to mix and mingle with other parents/caregivers in a room dedicated to this program AND – if anyone’s hungry/hangry – you can order on up some delish grub as you’re right at Busboys & Poets. Win, win, win.
