Kids’ Weekend Guide: Oct. 13th-15th

Touch-a-Truck (or bus!) is this weekend!

Got activities to check off all your boxes! Like Touch-a-Truck Family Festival, Kids’ Capoeira Angola Class, Hyattsville’s Zombie Run, Greenbelt’s Fall Fest & more!

FRIDAY 

Small Fry Club
Bring your toddler to pre-K aged children for some fun in the form of stories, games, and crafts! Use this time to take a mental break. Don’t worry, we’ll keep them busy!
When: 10-11am
Where: Watkins Nature Center, 301 Watkins Park Dr, Upper Marlboro
Cost: $4 resident; $6 nonresident

Open Gym at PG Sports & Learning Complex
This place is HUGE. Great for 1-12 years old. Two climbing walls. Two foam pits. Tons of equipment for curious ones to explore and blow off some steam. Very clean. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Adults are to be on the floor with the children (Max 3 child:1 adult).
When: 4:30-5:30pm
Where: PG Sports & Learning Complex, 8001 Sheriff Road, Landover
Cost: $7 per child.

G.E.A.R.: Halloween Mason Jars

Ages 10-17. Get ready for your scariest Halloween yet by pouring into making creepy-looking & scary Mason Jars. So, what’s it gonna be? A wicked witch? A tantalizingly terrifying tarantula? Or, maybe a ferocious Frankenstein? You decide! Create the design of your choice.

When: 7-10pm
Where: Beltsville Community Center, 3900 Sellman Rd, Beltsville 
Cost: Free! 

G.E.A.R.: Rubik’s Cube Tissue Box
Ages 10-17. The Rubik’s Cube is a perpetually, perplexing piece of problematic puzzles that was once all the rage. Come join us to see if you can solve the puzzle to make something useful like a stylish tissue box for your room or locker. Or, you can change it up and use it for storage.
When: 7-10pm

Where: PG Plaza Community Center, 6600 Adelphi Rd, Hyattsville 
Cost: Free w/ M-NCPPC Youth ID

SATURDAY

**Community Rummage Sales! –> There are no less than 4 community rummage sales, including HY-Swap, this Saturday! Check out this post here to learn the when and wheres!

Second Annual Hyattsville Zombie Run! 
All fitness levels welcome! There’s a 5K, 1 Mile Kids’ Challenge and a 1K Family Fun Run! Money raised goes towards classroom resources, art and music supplies, field trips and more.
When: 8:45am-2pm
Where: Magruder Park, Hyattsville
Cost: tickets here.

Touch-a-Truck Family Festival
Let the kids see, touch and explore a variety of vehicles, including huge utility trucks, buses, construction equipment, emergency vehicles & more! Arts on a Roll will also be there as will moon bounces, carnival games, etc. We’ve been and the kids always enjoy themselves! (Park at front of school)
When: 10am-2pm
Where: DeMatha High School, Hyattsville 
Cost: No entry fee (buy tickets for food, rides, etc)

Kids Capoeira Angola Class
Capoeira Angola is a rigorous workout that resembles both martial arts and dance. It also develops a cultural philosophy; rich in music, community and Afro-Brazilian ancestral connections.When: 10-11am
Where: Espaco Cultural Samba Trovão, 4318 Hamilton St, Hyattsville
Cost: $15 class

Celebracion Hispana!
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at Montpelier this fall! Have fun participating in special arts, crafts, and programs that are fun for the entire family!
When: 11am-2pm
Where: Montpelier Arts Center, 9652 Muirkirk Rd, Laurel
Cost: Free!  

Boo Bash!
Ages 6-12. Halloween games, fun, candy bags, music, and a costume parade. Come ready because there’s no telling what other “Bootastic” things might happen!
When: 11am-1pm
Where: Langley Park Community Center, 1500 Merrimac Dr, Hyattsville
Cost: Resident: $2; Nonresident: $3

Greenbelt Fall Fest
Join for hay rides, games, amusements, pumpkin patch, live music and art activities!
When: 2-5pm
Where: Schrom Hills Park, 6915 Hanover Parkway, Greenbelt
Cost: No entry fee

Hyattsville Music-Fest
Join your Hyattsville Art District Community at our first Hyattsville Music Fest! Family-friendly, featuring live music and performances by local area artists. Food trucks and vendors.
When: 2-8pm
Where: Polka Dot Park, 4320 Hamilton St, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!

SUNDAY 

Harvest Festival at Riversdale House Museum
Enjoy fall family fun with hands-on activities in the garden and open hearth kitchen. Create autumn crafts, snack on seasonal treats, dig up some fun with interactive activities in the garden, explore the open hearth kitchen, and more! Refreshments and activities are available while supplies last. Includes a tour of the historic house.
When: Sunday, Oct. 15th, 12-3:30pm
Where: Riversdale House Museum, 4811 Riverdale Rd, Riverdale Park
Cost: $5 adult; $2 student

Sunday Experiment – Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS)
Sunday Experiment features activities showcasing Goddard’s world-renowned science and engineering research and technological developments. Activities best suited for 5-10 year olds.

When: 1-3pm
Where: Goddard Visitor Center, 8800 Greenbelt Rd, Greenbelt
Cost: Free!

Children’s Puppet Performance of “Milo the Magnificent”
Milo the Magnificent and friends will make their first Greenbelt appearance this Sunday. Accompanying Milo are the creators, builders and master puppeteers, Alex and Olmsted (Alex Vernon and Sarah Olmsted Thomas). After the performance, Vernon and Thomas will conduct a Q&A about the show, puppet designs and their creative process. They have performed all over including NYC and are the 2017 Jim Henson Foundation Grant recipients.
When: 2-4pm
Where: New Deal Cafe, Greenbelt
Cost: No entry fee
