Kids’ Weekend Guide: Jan. 26th-28th

Exploring at the Patuxent Research Refuge!

It will be a cold weekend but not to worry, tons of indoor events to enjoy with the young’ns! Open Gym, Pretzel Crisp Decorating, Move & Groove, Screech & Kestral…the list goes on! Read on and get to planning! FRIDAY 

Storytime PopUp! @ The Waterhole
Join us for stories, songs, fingerplays and more at this innovation collaboration between PGCMLS & Mt. Rainier’s fabulous organic juice & smoothie joint, The Waterhole. Best for 0-5 years old. Curious? Click here for my review of The Waterhole!
When: 10am
Where: The Waterhole, 4004 34th St., Mt. Rainier
Cost: Free (Heads-up: Waterhole’s menu is delish, highly recommend indulging!)

Legos: Creative Club
Freestyle building. Legos will be provided and kids can let their imaginations run wild!
When: 2-3pm 
Where: Hyattsville Library, 6502 America Blvd, Hyattsville
Cost: Free! 

Super Saver Ice Skating!
Huge indoor ice skating rink with a warming hut and a snack bar – what else do you need?!
When: 3:15-5:15pm
Where: Herbert Wells Ice Rink, 5211 Campus Drive, College Park
Cost: $4 (skate rental included)!

Gymnastics Workshop / Open Gym at PG Sports & Learning Complex
This place is really great for 1-12 year olds! HUGE. Two climbing walls. Two foam pits. Tons of equipment for curious ones to explore and blow off some steam. Very clean. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Parents are required to be on the floor with the children (Maximum 3 child:1 adult). Check out my review here!
When: 4:30-5:30pm
Where: 8001 Sheriff Road, Landover
Cost: $7 per child.

SATURDAY 

Toddler Time @ Art Works Now
Open studio time for toddlers and their accompanying adults. Even the youngest children can explore a variety of age-appropriate art materials in a safe, fun environment. What to expect? Read my review of Toddler Time at Art Works Now.
When: 10am-12pm
Where: Art Works Now, 4800 Rhode Island Ave, Hyattsville
Cost: $5

Smaland at College Park’s Ikea
Kids play in indoor playground while yo enjoy some shopping or just relax/eat/peoplewatch at the restaurant upstairs. Kiddos must be potty trained and be 37” to 54” tall (so children typically b/w ages of 3-6). Tips: (1) Best to arrive earlier on in the day as day progresses, so do the entrances lines; & (2) Join Ikea Family & kids get extra 30 minutes to play (depending on capacity) & you get free mildly-decent coffee!
When: 10:30am – 7pm

Admission: Free!

Pretzel Crisp Decorating & Storytime at Whole Foods Market (Ages 4-10)
Join us in our store for an afternoon of storytime and pretzel decorating. Make your favorite story book character come to life as a yummy and nutritious treat! 
When: 11am-12pm 
Where: Whole Foods Market, Riverdale Park 
Cost: Free! Registration required here. 

Leap, Jump & Jam
A creative movement class for new dancers ages 3-5. Dancers will be introduced to the fundamentals of dance through fun movement games and exercises. *Use code ROUTE1MOVESITMINI to try this class for FREE!
When: 11:15am-12pm

Move & Groove
Move & Groove is a jazz and hip hop movement class for dancers ages 6 – 9. Dancers will be introduced to the basis of hip hop and jazz through fun and challenging exercises. *Use code ROUTE1MOVESITMINI to try this class for FREE!

Screech & Kestrel 
Meet two of North America’s smallest birds of prey: the American kestrel and eastern screech owl. Both expert hunters, the American kestrel uses its acrobatic prowess, while the eastern screech owlis a stealthy silent hunter.
When: 1-2pm
Where: Patuxent Research Refuge, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel
Cost: Free!
Read to Rover
Build your child’s confidence as they read to specially trained therapy dogs and cats. Bring a book or choose one from the library. Each child will read for 15 minutes. Call branch to register. *If you haven’t been to the Laurel Library yet – it’s awesome! Check out review, here! 
When: 1:30-2:30pm 
Where: Laurel Library, 507 7th Street 
Cost: Free!

Whose Clues? (Ages 7-10)
Come be a wildlife detective with a ranger on the North Tract. Search for evidence like Sherlock Holmes and discover what is living in our forest. Please bring water bottle and dress for the weather. Registration required: 301-497-5887

Where: Patuxent Research Refuge, North Tract, 230 Bald Eagle Drive, Laurel
Cost: Free!

Family Fun Bowling Bash
Includes unlimited bowling, shoe rental, soda and pizza! Limited number of lanes have gutter guards.
When: 1-4pm
Where: AMF Bowling, College Park
Cost: $5/person for first 100 residents from College Park; after that, $10/person
