Holy Redeemer School, College Park

Welcome back to our Spotlight on Schools series, where parents of school-aged children reach out to share their experience with a school in Prince George’s County.  In this eighth (!) installment, Brie Hall puts College Park’s Holy Redeemer School on our radar and shares how her fifth grader has flourished, socially and academically, at this school!

& Marketing Director, Secretary to the Principal at Holy Redeemer School

Established in 1931, Holy Redeemer School is Catholic parish school nestled in the Berwyn neighborhood of College Park. Currently, we have over 250 students and we offer Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.

Our school houses a state-of- the-art Technology Center, Science Lab, Art Studio, Library, and Music Studio. As a parent, I love seeing the students working on the smartboards in the classrooms, having my child come and talk about designing cities with his classmates, seeing the watercolor paintings that come home and listening to the wonderful songs he is singing in Music class.

Leveled Math groups for Grades 4-8 and leveled Literature groups for Grades 6-8 help to meet the needs of each student while keeping a low student-teacher ratio. Our school also offers special education services from a certified special education teacher. The students attend computer class, along with using the class sets of iPads in their classrooms to enhance the students’ education.

Our principal, Mrs. Maria Bovich, has been at the school for nine years. She has definitely reinforced the motto of Excellence in Education with the Power of Faith. She was named the Archdiocese of Washington’s Distinguished Principal of the Year for the 2016-2017 school year. She also received the 2017 National Catholic Educational Association’s Lead. Learn. Proclaim Award for leadership.

Our school is also home to two Golden Apple award winning teachers. This honor from the Archdiocese of Washington is awarded to just ten teachers each year in the entire archdiocese. Our fourth grade teacher and our religion teacher received this prestigious “Teacher of the Year” award in the last two years. All of our teachers are state certified and our school is fully accredited with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement.

Our students have religion class every day and participate in our Monday morning prayer service and our weekly school Mass. Students learn about service to others through monthly service projects and almsgiving. We have a full library with a full time certified librarian. Hot lunch is available for purchase every day.

My son has been involved in the numerous extra-curricular activities offered by the school. From the CYO sports program to the Little Einsteins Science Club to the Chess Club, there are a wide variety of activities for all students.

In my opinion, the best thing about Holy Redeemer School is the community. There are several activities that promote this, including the Ice Cream Social at the beginning of the year, the BBQs and parent socials, Grandparents Day, Donuts for Dads and Muffins for Moms. I love
getting together with the other parents that I have become friends with as our children participate in events like the Family Fun Night, Principal and Padre’s Wine and Cheese, Instrumental Band concerts, the Christmas Pageant, the Spring Musical and International Day.

My son has loved all of the field trips he has taken with his classes. They have been to the National Zoo, the US Capitol, the Franklin Institute and the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, the Baltimore Science Center, the Building Museum, the STEM day at the Baysox Stadium; just to
name a few. He also enjoyed the trips to the local rehabilitation center to do art projects with the residents. He and his friends really enjoyed this trip and look forward to going back again soon.

I could not be more pleased with the progress my son has made. He has flourished in this school, both socially and academically.

Curious about Holy Redeemer School? Come see why families have been sending their children to Holy Redeemer School for generations. Our school is open for tours at any time by appointment. The school lives out its motto of Excellence in Education with the Power of Faith. We have some openings for next school year, especially in Pre-Kindergarten and Second Grade.
