A dear Route One Fun reader and Gymkana fan reached out to ask for our help getting the word out about the local gymnastics treasure. “What word?”; you ask? Well, the word that Gymkana is going through it right now and is asking for our help.
Due to safety concerns related to COVID-19, the organization has been unable to run any of their programs since March 2020. As a self-funded program, this halt has put them in a difficult financial situation. While we haven’t yet had the good fortune to try Gymkana ourselves, we know how well-loved this program is to so many Route One Fun readers. We’re happy to share the good word about their Reload the Truck fundraising campaign with you all.
Gymkana Fundraising Campaign
Via Ben Prescott, Assistant Director & Gymkana Coach
Founded as a gymnastics and acrobatics exhibition team in 1946, Gymkana now serves as an outreach program of the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland. Its current mission is to be ambassadors for healthy lifestyles through gymnastics performances and programs. Every year, Gymkana travels to perform their exciting shows for local schools and community events. They also offer camps and classes that share the joy of learning gymnastics along with the message of making healthy choices.
Gymkana is self funded, with the vast majority of revenue coming from their summer camp and gymnastics classes. Unfortunately, due to safety concerns related to the ongoing pandemic, they have been unable to run any of their programs since March 2020 and are in a very difficult financial situation. Gymkana is raising money to help provide some financial stability until their programs can support their needs again.
There is an ongoing fundraising campaign through the month of February to support Gymkana. Find it at https://go.umd.edu/reloadthetruck
