Introducing “Furry Friends of Route 1” with Maggie & Pearl!

We all feel the stress building inside of us. It’s unavoidable right now and generally necessary to the extent that it encourages us to help physically practice safety measures intended to keep us all as healthy as we can be. But these times of social distancing can also have an impact on our mental health. We’re sociable creatures, for the most part 😉 and these times can feel isolating and lonely.

Introducing Maggie and Pearl!

Furry Friends of Route 1

In an attempt to help chip away at those feelings, we’re starting a Furry Friends of Route 1 series featuring your beloved pets! (Thanks to Rajni’s prompting!) Everyone loves looking at animals, even if you don’t own any, right?!? And learning a bit about the furry friends you see around town might give you a momentary break from the gray, right? (Does for me, at least.) As Rajni put it best: “Pets are doing a lot during these times. Some are getting more love and giving more love, others are getting pissed that they don’t have their space during the daytime!” Let’s have fun meeting new furry friends and their “hoomans.”

Look out for this Maggie's upcoming feature!

Look out for Mount Rainier’s Maggie’s upcoming feature!

So while we don’t have a cure for all the feels, we do hope our Furry Friends of Route 1 series will bring some sunshine to your day and remind us all of the great community we share here along the Route 1 corridor. Hyattsville’s Erika Nizborski kicks the series off by sharing a little bit about their two furry fam members, Maggie & Pearl.

Meet Maggie of Hyattsville

What’s your pet’s name & age: Maggie, 3 years (brown)

Maggie on left. 😉

What do you love most about your pet: Maggie is one of the goofiest dogs I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. She’s always making us laugh.

What are some favorite thing(s) your pet likes to do with you? Maggie loves to go on hikes, play the “hands game” and cuddle on the couch.

What’s the funniest thing your pet has ever done? She’s done so many things but the most consistently funny thing she does with out fail, is every morning after she eats her breakfast she has to come burp in my face.

What’s your pet’s favorite food: banana

What do you like best about spending more time at home with your pet? Maggie gives us a reason to laugh in these uncertain times.

Meet Pearl of Hyattsville

What’s your pet’s name & age: Pearl, 2 years (black & white)

What do you love most about your pet: Pearl is one of the most loyal dogs I’ve ever met.

What are some favorite thing(s) your pet likes to do with you? Pearl loves going to her agility training class at Greenbelt dog training. She is so bummed out that she can’t go right now.

What’s the funniest thing your pet has ever done? Pearl is obsessed with Squirrels. She’s only about 25 lbs but, one time she was chasing a squirrel in the backyard and climbed up a large tree about 6 ft up the trunk trying to get it. Eventually she made her way over the fence into the neighbors yard looking for it. She hasn’t ever caught one, but we did have to reinforce the fence and make it “Pearl Proof”.

What’s your pet’s favorite food: Pearl would tell you it’s Squirrel meat but, she’s never actually had it. She will do anything for a “chicken skewer” AKA dried chicken on a rawhide stick.

What do you like best about spending more time at home with your pet? Both of our pups are rescues. Pearl is especially shy of people. Since we’ve had more quality time with her over the past few weeks she has become more comfortable lounging around and joining in on couch cuddles.

Proud papa Steve!

Want your furry friend to be a part of this fun? (All pets welcome!)

Joining in this fun is easy! Just email us your answers to the questions above (as well as any other info or anecdotes you’d like to share along with 3-4 good photographs of your furry friend (ideally 1 or 2 with their humans in the picture(s)). Send your email to sarah at routeonefun dot com. Know that sending us your info and pictures means that you’re a-ok with us using and sharing your information and photographs on Route One Fun’s website and social media platforms for all to see. Which is the point, right?! 🙂

As of now, we’ve got about 5 other furry families lined up, so there will be a bit of a wait but your bundle of joy will have his/her time in the spotlight soon enough, for sure!

Thank you, all!
