Route 1 Kids Weekend Guide: March 1st-3rd

Route 1 kids have all the fun! Walk the plank at a Pirate Party in Hyattsville. Catch the 1966 classic Born Free in Greenbelt. Celebrate Dr. Seuss in a STEM-tastic way in Laurel. Fierce Superheroes & Villians in Bladensburg & more kid-friendly fun all this weekend!

Friday Fun Along Route 1

Storytime PopUp! @ The Waterhole
Join us for stories, songs, fingerplays and more at this innovation collaboration between PGCMLS & Mt. Rainier’s fabulous organic juice & smoothie joint. Best for 0-5 years old. Curious? Then read my review of The Waterhole!

Explore! at the National Portrait Gallery
Bring the kid(s) to one of the coolest museums in DC! Follow my itinerary in here, including a stop-off at their Explore! Room and you’ll be all set to have a great time!

Saturday Fun Along Route 1

Mardi Gras 5K
Celebrate Mardi Gras at Riverdale Park Station. We’ll have a 5K race, 2 mile walk adn a 1K Kids Fun Run. Beads, King Cake, brass band and even Denizens beer (for adult finishers)!
When: 9am-11am

4th Annual Pirate Party
Walk the plank, play some games, win some prizes. Pirate photo booth, treasure hunt and more!
When: 10am-12:30pm

Cost:$10/child ($5 for each additional child in same family) Adults & children under 2 are free.

Toddler Time @ Art Works Now

Watch this 1966 classic true story of an English couple who teach their pet lioness how to survive in the wilds of the African jungles.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday by learning ways to improve our environment. Participants will watch “The Lorax” and complete Dr. Seuss crafts.

Dinosaur Park Open House & Fossil Deposit Interpretation
Meet paleontologists, learn about Maryland prehistory, and search an active fossil site for 115 million-year-old remains of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals! We took the kids here and they loved it! Now – it’s pretty bare bones (pun intended); no amenities – basically an open archaeological site behind some warehouses. But if your kids have adventurous minds and love discovering prehistoric things, then it’s worth a visit. Tip: While you’re in the area, why not also check out the Kids Room at the newly renovated Laurel Public Library. My post about it, here.

Fierce Superheroes & Villians (Ages 6+)
When superheroes first appeared in comic books, many minority groups were heavily underrepresented. This exciting program and exhibit will celebrate the many fierce black women superheroes & villains of comic books, television, and the big screen.
When:1-3pm
Where Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Bladensburg

Sunday Fun Along Route 1

Diven’s Den
Have fun in this STEM-inspired playroom located in the basement of the Laurel Historical Society, filled with crafts and activities designed to teach the young’ns a bit about the history of Laurel.
When: 1-4pm

Cost: Free

10th Annual Irish Celebration
Join St. Jerome’s community for this annual celebration of all things Irish! There will be traditional Irish food and drink, bake sale, entertaining pub songs, bagpipers and more. Kids can decorate cupcakes and don glitter tattoos for $1 each. Raffle drawing and more!
When: 2-6pm
