Volunteering at Holiday Time: Recommendations, please!

A number of Route One Fun readers have reached out to me asking for recommendations on places to volunteer during the holiday season. (And yes, we all get that volunteering year-round would be ideal, but let's welcome any interest as a first step towards that goal.) While I know of a handful, I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations so reaching out to this fabulous Route One community now for your input. Where do YOU like to volunteer along Route 1 or the general DC-metro area? Please enter your recommendation in the comments below (or email me directly, Sarah@routeonefun.com ) and I'll include your input in a forthcoming compilation post featuring local and DC-area recommended volunteer opportunities! Thank you! 👊

Spotlight on Silver Oaks Cooperative School, Adelphi, Maryland

Spotlight on Schools: Silver Oaks Cooperative School

Curious about the local schools in and around the Route 1 corridor? Then check out Route One Fun's Spotlight on Schools series, where local parents share their thoughts and insight on 9 (and counting!) local schools (including preschool).  In this latest Spotlight, we shine some light on Silver Oaks Cooperative School, a new cooperative elementary school in Adelphi, Maryland. Dana Tompkins, a local parent whose child attends kindergarten at Silver Oaks Cooperative School, shares her thoughts and the inside scoop on this local, private elementary school in Prince George's County, Maryland.

Silver Oaks Cooperative School

🏫 Silver Oaks Cooperative School 🏫

By: Dana Tompkins, mother of a kindergartner at Silver Oaks Cooperative School

Tell Us About Silver Oaks Cooperative School:

Silver Oaks, currently in its first year, serves grades K-3 and is growing a grade each year. I love that the school has small class sizes and takes from the best parts of well-known education models such as Montessori, Emilia-Reggio, Waldorf, and the Finish model. A regular school day includes strong academics, extensive outdoor time, individual focus, social-emotional learning, arts integration, and Spanish language. And thanks to the cooperative model, tuition is very reasonable.

Silver Oaks Cooperative School

Parental Involvement at Silver Oaks Cooperative School:

Basically you can be as involved (or not) as you want! The school has three co-oping tuition structures that allow for full co-op, partial co-op, or non co-op options. Our family choose the full co-op option, which means that once every two weeks I spend a day helping in the classroom, which I enjoy. Parents are also asked to attend membership meetings, serve on a committee, and participate in other school activities. It’s wonderful to know what our son is learning first-hand and to be part of a tight-knit community of other families. Most important for us though is that there’s no big bureaucracy to get lost in or to wait years for things to change—parents have a direct line to the school’s director and are encouraged to speak up, if there’s a concern.

What Children Learn at Silver Oaks Cooperative School

Another parent described the teachers at Silver Oaks as “gifted,” and I couldn’t agree more. I love seeing the creative lessons that the teachers come up with—Geography Jeopardy, Hula Hoop phonics, the “someday” playground project, and “composting” worms in the classroom. As a parent, it’s wonderful to see the kids excited to learn different things in new, creative ways.

I also love that the school takes great care to find the best learning tools for the kids. Teachers use Singapore Math, Writer’s Workshop, and Handwriting without Tears to supplement their curriculum. With smaller class sizes, and flexible grouping, the children are given the individualized attention they need based on their academic level and ability, not their grade level. It’s amazing to see my kindergartner already learning to read and write in such a short period of time!

Silver Oaks Cooperative School

What Do You Like Most About Silver Oaks Cooperative School?

There’s so much to like that I hardly know where to start. What my husband and I were initially attracted to is, “The Great Outdoors” as one of the school’s guiding principles. Surrounded by beautiful wooded land, the school has at least two thirty minute recesses called, “outdoor work” and sometimes lessons are even taught outdoors! The kids have climbing structures, wheel barrows, gardening tools, tires, ropes, and more. It’s amazing to see what they come up with! Rain jackets, boots, and extra clothes are a must, too, as the kids go out rain, shine, or mud. I love that the Silver Oaks teachers understand that children need playtime in order to learn and that outdoor time is never taken away as a punishment.

Silver Oaks Cooperative School

Upcoming Open Houses at Silver Oaks Cooperative School

There are still spaces available for this academic school year and applications are currently being accepted for next year’s classes. Contact the school to learn more. Open houses: Tuesday, December 4th at 9:30am; Saturday, January 12th at 10am; and Tuesday, January 15th at 9:30am.

Questions?

As part of the Spotlight on Schools series, I ask each parent/author to make him/her/themselves directly available to readers who may have some questions about the school. Dana Tompkins graciously agreed to do so and can be reached at: dana_tompkins@hotmail.com.

Hyper Kidz: Awesome Indoor (Unlimited) Playground for Kids!

With the holiday weekend ahead of us, thought I'd drop some knowledge on (and a DISCOUNT CODE for Route One Fun readers to) Hyper Kidz, an ultimate, super-duper fun indoor playground in Columbia, Maryland that's perfect for kids to climb, slide, carousel, bounce, jump and run all around! (And you'll be thrilled to learn that it's located just behind Black Flag Brewing Company - because I also care about your needs. 😜)

Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground

Step Inside Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground - Big Kid Zone!

When you step inside Hyper Kidz, you'll see that there are actually three kids play zones with fun indoor activities, each targeting different age groups. The Big Kid Zone is for kids ages 3-13 and includes a massive jungle gym, three tall, long slides, a ball blaster, ramps and more. This is where my 8 year old spent the most time - running through the jungle gym, climbing the kids' ladder to the slide and then sliding down as fast as he could - just to do it all again!

Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground

Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground

Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground - Kid Zone!

The "Kid Zone" is for ages 2-7 and full of ball pits, slides, spinning palms carousel, building block room (great place to retreat to if kiddo wants some space away from the crowds), giant light up wall - plus there's seating all around the perimeter so if you're comfortable, you young'n could play while you rest your tired feet.

Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground
She could have played in this ball pit all day!

Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground

So much fun was had on this "spinning palms" carousel-type activity! Super-soft so no worries about their noggins when they invariably fall off the palm...!

Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground

Playing at the giant light up wall was a great way for the kids to take a break without taking a break entirely.
Hyper Kidz Columbia Maryland

Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground - Mini Zone!

And then there's the Mini Zone, a self-contained play area for infants and toddlers up to 2 years old. We didn't spend much time there but it did look perfect for the mighty wee ones and I can attest that when my curious 4-year old tried to enter, she was respectfully rebuffed by the polite employee who told her that this area was just for 0-2 year olds (a peace of mind, I'm sure, for parents with kiddos of the younger variety).

Hyper Kidz Indoor Playground

We really enjoyed our time at Hyper Kidz. While I do wish that it was located closer to my neck of the woods (as I wish everything was 😆), the drive to Columbia was well worth it for the fun they had - especially my 4 year old; she could have stayed there all day! As for my 8-year old, an hour and a half or so was good enough for him. I sense that 8 or 9-years old is probably the max for Hyper Kidz. Just keepin' it real witchoo!

Travel Tips:

  • If planning to go in the morning, plan to arrive 20 minutes or so after opening as the usual line will have diminished by then;
  • Check the Hyper Kidz Facebook page prior to heading out as they'll post there if they've already reached capacity for the day or a period of time (it happens).
  • Plan to spend between 1.5 to 2 hours here (perhaps more if you're really determined. 😆
  • BRING YOUR OWN SOCKS! PARENTS, TOO! If you forget to do so, never fear - they do have simple, plain socks available for purchase (which is a relief because dear me, I have more Pump-It-Up socks than I have children - which is two, too many).
  • We did not make it to Black Flag Brewing Company but I did notice that their hours are mainly in the afternoon - so take that into account is this is to be a part of your excursion.

Discount! 💰

Lucky for you, Hyper Kids is offering Route One Fun readers $2 off a weekday admission just for mentioning "Route One Fun" at checkout (making it $5 for infants, $7 for ages 1-2, $9 for ages 3-13)! 👏

Go! Enjoy! And then come back and share your experience with us all in the comments below!

Hyper Kidz is located at 9309 Snowden River Parkway, Columbia, Maryland 21046.

See Hyper Kidz website for admission and hours information (and mention "Route One Fun" for $2 off a weekday admission!)

Brentwood Arts Exchange: Jordann Wine's "It's Not All Glitter And Rainbows"

While at Glitterfest at the Brentwood Arts Exchange yesterday, I had a chance to pop over to check out It's Not All Glitter And Rainbows by Washington, DC-based artist Jordann Wine. Full of color, vibrancy and, of course, glitter, Wine's art draws you in and makes you wish your young'n was equally engaged and not instead tugging at your jacket for some snacks. Feeble human. 😉 (Speaking of wee ones, the pieces are just high enough that they're out of reach for the 0-4 year old crew, just in case want to stop by with your offspring.)

Jordann Wine It's Not All Glitter And Rainbows"

True to its description, the exhibit is a "continuous study of patterns, sacred geometry, color and movement...[which] invites us to reflect on the infinite. With the playful use of glitter, [Jordann Wine] vibrantly engages the viewer, welcoming contemplation, meditation, and an endless exploration of the elements that connect us all."

Jordann Wine It's Not All Glitter And Rainbows"

According to Jordann Wine's bio, the artist has "elevated [glitter] to a painterly standard as she foregrounds the material’s inherent qualities of holding and releasing light. She makes use of the medium’s full range of iridescent, opaque, and translucent color qualities. The childish or garish reputation of glitter changes into a reflective cosmic field inviting the eye to travel into a world of endless possibilities."

Jordann Wine It's Not All Glitter And Rainbows"

Jordann Wine It's Not All Glitter And Rainbows"

An artists talk for It's Not All Glitter and Rainbows as well as as well as Push & Pull: Variations on Nature is scheduled for December 1st at 2pm and will lead a conversation about their experience and art making process.
Hope you enjoyed this little peek inside this cool, local exhibit! 👊 And in case you're interested in music, too - know that the Brentwood Arts Exchange also hosts live music concerts. (Think Tiny Desk Concerts without the NPR bit.) Read about the time we caught Be Steadwell at the Brentwood Arts Exchange.

Where Am I Wednesday: Historic Bostwick House Edition

The Bostwick House
The Bostwick House
Where in Prince George's County might you find the Bostwick House, an elegant two and one-half story Georgian structure completed in 1746 whose terraced lawns are linked with white marble steps that once graced the U.S. Capitol (and whose front porch was recently treated to great restoration work thanks to the fine folks at HistoriCorps)?

The Bostwick House Bladensburg Maryland

Here's a hint: This historic house has ties to the town's mercantile roots, the War of 1812 and sits across from the Anacostia River. What's that? You think the Bostwick House is located in the Town of Bladensburg, Maryland? 🔔🔔🔔 You are correct! This beautiful historic house is indeed located in Bladensburg and was actually purchased by the town in 1997 for "public purposes the preserve this unusual and precious piece of Bladensburg history," according to a brochure issued by the Friends of Bostwick, Inc.

The Bostwick House
Take a moment to imagine this being the view from your front door, a look onto the
of the resplendent Anacostia River Valley  (minus chainsaw-ish device to the left).

According to this Washington Post article from 2012, the Bostwick House is "one of only four one of only four pre-Revolutionary structures still standing in the town. '[Bostwick] really represents why Bladensburg is there in the first place, for the port and the trade,' said Aaron Marcavitch, executive director of Anacostia Trails Heritage Area Inc., an organization that works to promote the history and cultural resources in northern Prince George’s County. The organization is working to help Bladensburg raise awareness for the needs of Bostwick House."

Bostwick House

When Aaron invited me to a behind-the-scenes tour of the Bostwick House, I jumped at the chance to absorb more of our local history, run my fingers along and mind around what used to be and to take some sweet pics of the details that caught my eye - like the beautifully intricate design on a radiator I spotted, the soft curves on a marble mantelpiece (I *think* marble, don't quote me 😉), the woodwork along the stairwell. Man oh man. 😍
