2018 marks the 9th anniversary of College Park Day (and our fourth time at this fun event)!  College Park Day is where we first witnessed the amazing acrobatics of Gymkana, where we learned a ton about all the great local businesses and organizations we have in our area, where our kids played on bouncy houses, painted pumpkins, danced to some zydeco jams and where they high-fived Testudo, like this wee one from last year's College Park Day!  Read on for a sneak peek on who and what will be at this year's College Park Day!

College Park CAVA to Open this November

Walked by the site for the soon-to-open CAVA in College Park a couple of weeks ago and noticed some ongoing construction, suggesting that the location's opening was running a little bit behind schedule (previously projected for summer 2018).

CAVA College Park Maryland

When I reached out to CAVA earlier this month, a rep noted that they would "not be open by the end of the month, but should be soon after!" Open up the Diamondback this morning to read that they're slated to open in November! To my knowledge, this will be the first CAVA in Prince George's County, Maryland.

I love Mediterranean food so really looking forward to this opening, as well as the forthcoming opening of Mezze Grill at the Mall at Prince George's (slated for October). In the meantime, can get my Mediterranean fix at College Park's Marathon Deli & Kapnos Taverna as well as Yia Yia's Kitchen in Beltsville.

Inside Maryland Meadworks Hyattsville's Soft Opening!

We've a new brewery in town and this one's serving up something sweet! Hyattsville's Maryland Meadworks opened its doors recently for a couple of soft openings, giving eager beavers like this lady here a chance to try some delish mead ahead of their forthcoming grand opening this October.

Maryland Meadworks Hyattsville Meadery
Rumi, Ken & Jay of Maryland Meadworks
Owner and head brewer Ken Carter decided to open this first meadery in Prince George's County after home brewing for a number of years. When an opportunity arose to make use of a great space next to Hyattsville's Shortcake Bakery, Ken & Rumi Matsuyama (wife, fitness guru, local superstar and more) got to work clearing out the old space, purchasing furniture, acquiring permits, etc. Last October, Maryland Meadworks set up a Kickstarter to help with purchasing some necessary equipment. Thankfully, the Kickstarter raised over $12,000 and helped get Maryland Meadworks get on track for opening this fall.

I know very little about Mead, which is why it was really helpful to have Jay behind the bar for last night's soft opening, explaining in great, patient detail the story behind each of five meads on the menu. (Who knew Meads came in so many varieties?!?! Perhaps all of you knew that, but this simpleton didn't so I was tickled to see that they even have a mead for IPA drinkers like mycalled "Bitter Bee.")

Truth be told though I fell in love with "Blue is the New Orange," with its smooth, oak-y taste and dry finish. And it's 14% ABV. Mamma like.

As shared on their Kickstarter page, "Maryland Meadworks’ mission is to produce handmade, high-quality, great-tasting mead—also known as honey wine—using natural brewing processes and the best local and regional ingredients available, including some honey from Hyattsville's own Hope Honey Farms."

Maryland Meadworks is hosting a couple more soft openings ahead of their grand opening in October.  Check out their Facebook page to learn the dates and be in the know!

See how much fun you can have with mead?!?
*Cool little fact about Mead: Mead is gluten free (unless it's a type made with malt, which is more an exception than a rule, I'm told).

Maryland Meadworks is located at 4700 Rhode Island Ave in Hyattsville (same row as Shortcake Bakery).  And while you're in the area, why not also check out these great local breweries, too: Streetcar 82 Brewing Company, Franklins Restaurant, Brewery and General Store, Town Center Market (not a brewery, itself, but still a great spot to enjoy some craft beer), Pizzeria Paradiso (also not a brewery but amazing pizza and a meticulously fine craft beer menu) and, soon enough, Denizens Brewing Co. (coming to Riverdale Park Station).

Orangetheory Fitness Coming to College Park

Orangetheory Fitness is soon opening its doors in College Park, with a launch party happening September 12th! I trustingly put an exclamation mark there because I know of folks who LOVE and swear by Orangetheory though I've personally never tried it. But your happiness is my happiness, or something like that. πŸ˜„

Orangetheory Fitness College Park Maryland

According to their website, Orangetheory works like this: "In a 60-minute class, led by a highly trained and certified coach, members target at least twelve minutes in the Orange Zone to raise their heart rate and charge up metabolism. The result is an increase in calorie burn post-workout, backed by the science of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). After twelve minutes of hard work in the Orange Zone, your body burns additional calories as you recover over the next 36 hours." 36 hours of additional calorie burn for just 12 minutes of hard work sounds like a deal/trick to me πŸ˜‰, so I'll probably check it out.

Orangetheory Fitness College Park Maryland

The new location is in the retail spaces of the Cambria Suites in College Park, along same row as a new CVS and the newly opened College Park Grill, which I've been hearing great things about! Info on their launch party here.

Orangetheory Fitness will be joining a growing roster of fitness clubs that have made the Route One Corridor their home, including Riverdale Park's Gold's Gym, Hyattsville's LA FitnessPlanet Fitness and CrossFit as well as gems like College Park's Numi Yoga and Open Barre, Riverdale Park's Bikram Yoga, Hyattsville's Love Yoga and YogaSpace as well as Zumba, Samba Dance and Capoeira at Espaco Cultural Samba Trovao and Mt. Rainier's Joe's Movement Emporium always brings it with their Hip Hop, Dancehall, African Dance and Belly Dancing classes!

We're some lucky ducks!
