Get Outside & Explore the National Arboretum (It's Free)!

Every season is a good season to explore the National Arboretum, though springtime does kinda rule! Everything's in bloom, colors as far as the eye can see, bees buzzing, temps perfect for strolling through the beautiful park. At only 15 or so minutes from the Gateway Arts District, it's a great destination when you just want to go and enjoy the great outdoors.

At 446 acres, the National Arboretum is huge and full of enough gardens and collections to make any/everyone happy. My three-year-old loves to explore the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum to see the "tiny trees," as she fittingly calls them.

I took this as an opp to chat with my lady about Japan (basically that it's another country, starts with the letter "J" so not exactly rocket science but just trying to think of ways to broaden horizons).

We next checked out the Herb Garden. Which is HUGE! Over 800 herbs from around the world growing in 10 theme gardens. I appreciated this organization as it was so cool to, for instance, take a look at the "Beverage Garden" and then see (and recognize) the various plants used for making teas, liquors, beer, etc.

Due to my companion's legs only being in year three and our trip inching towards nap time, this was the closest I got to the National Capitol Columns. Sigh. Next time, I'm bringing a stroller.

If you're searching for a low-key, local, free & beautifully curated place to explore the outdoors, then put a trip to the National Arboretum on your list!

Tips:
(1) If you have stroller-aged children, do yourself a solid and bring the stroller. When s/he tires, you'll then have the option of continuing to explore these glorious grounds while your young'n rests;
(2) Try to park by R Street entrance. It's closest to the bathrooms AND the gift shop (which has a ton of snacks, in the event you run out/forget); &
(3) Pack a picnic and eat it in one of the designated areas;

The US National Arboretum is located at 3501 New York Avenue NE, Washington DC 20002 (for GPS and online directions, site suggests using 2400 R Street NE address).

Have you been to the Arboretum? Where's your favorite place to enjoy the great outdoors in/around Route One? Share in comments below!

Traveling Carnival Coming to Hyattsville

Big ole carnival full of tilt-a-whirls, Viking boats, bumper cars and funnel cakes is coming soon to Hyattsville's University Town Center, May 2nd - May 13th. While the website here doesn't note the precise location at UTC, last year's traveling carnival set up shop in the parking lot across from Town Center Wine & Spirit / Pollo Campero, so odds are that it will be in that spot again. Speaking of last year's carnival, here's some pics; a preview, perhaps, of what to expect:

What's Coming to Riverdale Park Station?!?

Drive-in movies, dance bands, cooking classes, outdoor fitness classes, beer ping pong and mini-golf are just some of the awesome ideas that were offered up and discussed at this evening's focus group, convened by Riverdale Park Station (RPS) to get the community's input on possible upcoming programming and activities. (Another focus group is meeting tomorrow. Details here.)

📷 by Riverdale Park Station's Instragram feed

Now - this doesn't mean that these things are necessarily, definitely going to happen. But given that RPS has partnered with Biederman Redevelopment Ventures to guide its programing, my hopes are purdy high. Why?  Because Daniel Biederman and his crew know a thing or two about programming for public spaces; Biederman was the force behind turning NYC's Bryant Park the lively, vibrant, awesome park it is today, full of life and programs that this former Manhattanite used to frequent ( & ❤). While RPS is not Bryant Park, it's exciting to have a team with this successful track record working to bring cool, new programs for our local communities to enjoy.

Coming Soon: More fun programs like RPS's Carnival last weekend!
Speaking of, here are some of the ideas that were floated as possible events to host at Riverdale Park Station:  Music program (a cappella groups, accordion players, string quartets); Arts and crafts classes/demos; Reading Room; Author Readings; Chess/Checkers tables; Carousel; Lawn Games; Outdoor fitness; Square Dancing; Art & Holiday Markets; Photography Classes; Historic Walking Tours & more!

They noted that these programs would (for the most part) be free and all planned with the goal of making RPS both a community center and a place where you do your shopping. They also noted that they would be mindful of programming events that do not compete with local small businesses.

As a former aging policy advocate, I put in a plug for them to reach out to the various local aging-in-place groups (like Hyattsville's Aging in Place and University Park's Helping Hands UP  to encourage the inclusion of programs that will check off boxes for folks of all ages.

So - what say you?  What programs or events would you like to see at RPS?  Share in comments below!

PICTURES: March Sights Along Route One!

Enjoy peoples, places and general life along Route One? Me, too. Check out these pics of March Sights Along Route One! Maybe you'll be in one soon! 😊

Love this pic of Aaron Marcavitch, Executive Director of Maryland Milestones, who was clearly giddy (and rightly so!) about the packed house for the release of his new book on the history of Route 1, entitled: US Route 1: Baltimore to Washington, DC. Nice work, Aaron!

Clown's Without Borders performed at Joe's Movement Emporium and they were hilarious! You should definitely plan to check them out next time they're in town. Smiles from ear-to-ear on all of our faces as we watched the clowns' hijinks and then ohhh and ahhs as we watched the amazing acrobats do their thing!

Pyramid Atlantic's Book Arts Fair was fantastic! Such a cool concept.

Loved "The 50 Card Project" by Melanie Mowinski, where she created a a different limited-edition letterpress card based on different events, actions that occurred every week from Inauguration Day to the end of 2017.

Great turnout for University Park's March for Our Lives! Shout-out to UP's Michele Pintur and Jennifer Harling for organizing this local opportunity to show our support for this movement!

Organizers Michele Pintur & Jennifer Harling!
The opening reception for HERStory was a hit! Color Story Creative packed the house for this female art installation on view now at Hyattsville Studio SoHy.

Color Story Creative's Krissi Humbard & Adam Ortiz of Blue Plains
Local photographer Juliette Fradin (lover her in-home, family documentary style!)
And a sample of just one of the bajillion amazing houses and architecture to adore along Route One. Know which town this beaut is in? 😉

Hope you enjoyed this pictures-post! Hungry for more? Check out Route One Fun's Facebook and Instagram pages to satiate that appetite! :)

A Little Cabaret Noir for the Lady or Gent?

🔊 "Doesn’t it bother you at all that you’re married?"..."What I want to know is, does it bother you?" 🔊 "With my brains and your looks, we could go places." 🔊 "Keep on riding me and they’re going to be picking iron out of your liver."

No, this is not an "Overheard while standing in line at Safeway" post, but is instead an equally entertaining and intrinsically more scintillating Route One Review of Happenstance Theater's Cabaret Noir, performing now through April 15th at Mt. Rainier's Joe's Movement Emporium!

The intro quotes? They're taken from some of the most unforgettable film noir films, like Gilda (starring Rita Hayworth), The Postman Always Rings Twice (starring John Garfield) and The Maltese Falcon (starring Humphrey Bogart and Wilmer Cook)! See?!? You know more film noir than you thought!

📷 courtesy of Happenstance Theater
In Cabaret Noir, a "series of dark, comic vignettes reveals Femmes Fatales and fedoras, trench coats and torch songs, intrigue, suspense and shadows." I loved the no-nonsense, rapid fire dialogue, the costumes, the dramatics and the slow motion scenes.  Man, did I love those slow motion scenes! The amount of talent and skill it must take to make these scenes look as effortless and flawless as they were left me absolutely gobsmacked. Which is not an easy feat. 😉 Bravo, Happenstance!

📷 by Margaret Hart Photography.
But don't just take my word for it. The Happenstance ensemble has been praised by press all around, like when The Washington City Paper noted "Happenstance Theatre's ensemble comedy is gut-busting kind of funny." Or that time when the Washington Post described their work as "visually striking and whimsical without being precious." Or that time when they were voted the Best Comedy of the Capital Fringe [Festival]!
📷 courtesy of Happenstance Theater
Happenstance Theater performs at Bethesda's Round House Theatre, the Baltimore Theatre Project, Capital Fringe Festival and now they're bringing their goods to Joe's Movement Emporium! Read: You don't need to travel into DC or over to Bethesda for a good night at the theatre; Happenstance Theater is playing right in our own backyard, Route One!

Cabaret Noir is playing March 31st - April 15th, 2018 at Joe's Movement Emporium, 3309 Bunker Hill Road, Mt. Rainier, MD 20712. Purchase tickets here.
