Kid’s Dentist? Check out Children’s Choice Pediatric Dentistry!

If you’re like me, lining up your kiddo’s dentist appointment is right up there on the list of things you really should do but don’t really want to do. It’s not that you don’t want your child to have healthy teeth (though they do have another set under there; just sayin’ 😉 ); it’s that your child’s first visit to the dentist is a BIG DEAL so you’re still researching options. I get it. After all, a good visit will mean that Disney songbirds will gleefully chirp all around you as you schedule the next appointment. A bad visit may have you anxiously exploring ways to avoid the dentist, questioning the need for teeth, rationalizing that pureed food really is better for the digestive tract, anyway.

Well, I’m here to ease your mind and help you keep your child’s teeth as healthy as can be by highly recommending a visit to certified pediatric dentist Dr. Jonelle Anamelechi of Children’s Choice Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics in New Carrollton; it’s about a 15 minute drive from Route One and East West Highway. (In a nutshell: The visit was a fun, comforting one where both kiddos left with clean teeth, a balloon and a small toy won from the in-office toy vending machine! 👏 Read on for more!)

First Things First: The Waiting Room. This waiting room is bright and airy (as is the entire practice), has a life-sized Tic-Tac-Toe game as well as a bunch of other games to keep the kiddos occupied before their appointment time. Both of mine got busy with TTT and then moved on to using the big building blocks to do their thang.

Next Up: Time with Amazing Dental Hygenist, Mrs. Jo: Mrs. Jo was amazing. She’s incredibly skilled at making children feel comfortable and her calm demeanor even had me so relaxed with my kids in her care that I almost fell asleep. *Almost* She started off by explaining the process to me and then showing my children each piece of equipment and how it works (all in a light-hearted way). I kind of wished I could have Mrs. Jo accompany us on every medical/dental/school/life appointment from this point forward. I’ll look into that. 😄

I should also point out that the cleaning room is one large, bright, colorful room where the children can see other children similarly there for a visit. For my children, this was a big benefit as there’s comfort in seeing other smiling faces who’ve just done what you’re about to do. And are still alive. 😄

Bright, long room where the cleaning magic happens!
After their respective exams, I was asked whether I wanted them to take x-rays of my kiddos’ teeth. While I knew it wouldn’t be an issue for my 7-year old, I was hesitant about how my wriggly 3-year old would fare in an empty room with a heavy lead apron covering her body. Without any pressure, they explained that they would only attempt to do what they could based on my daughter’s comfort level. As luck would have it, she sat still for the first set and then refused the next. All was a-ok as they assured me that they’d have enough to go on with the first set of x-rays. Phew!

Dr. Anamelechi & her team!

Time with Dr. Anamelechi!  Kiddos made their way back to the examination chair where Dr. Anamelechi greeted them with a big smile and let them know that she would be taking a look to make sure their teeth were a-ok. As with Mrs. Jo, Dr. Anamelechi took the time to explain what was going to happen and made the kiddos feel comfortable. She also let them know that at the end of the exam, they would receive a balloon AND a token to get a small capsule toy from the nearby toy vending machine! Score!

We’re all really happy with our visit to Children’s Choice Pediatric Dentistry and will definitely be back for our next visit. Which I’ve already scheduled!!! 👏👏👏 As for you, say “no” to analysis paralysis and schedule your kiddo’s appointment with Dr. Anamelechi today. 😊

*On a related note, Dr. Anamelechi is hosting a children’s event at Whole Foods Market this Saturday, February 24th, 12-2pm, where she’ll be bringing superheroes to the store to talk about dental education and why superheroes eat veggies & fruit, too! Great opp for your child to meet the dentist and catch a fun event!

Children’s Choice Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics is located at 8500 Annapolis Rd, Suite 213, New Carrollton, MD. They’ll be opening a second location in Northeast DC-Michigan Park this summer!
