Kids’ Weekend Guide: Oct. 27th-29th

It’s Halloween weekend so there are a ton of fun, local free things to do with the young’ns, as well as non-spooky events to explore, too (marching band showcase or Kids’ Euro Fest, anyone?!). Hepe you enjoy this guide and share Route One Fun with many ghosts and goblins this weekend!

Kid-friendly fun at this celebration of Hyattsville artists & businesses! Kids activities at Art Works Now, some STEM craft fun at Polka Dot Park, live music by the Brass Connection & more!

Community Pumpkin Carving
Carve your spookiest (or funniest, or most political!) design into a provided pumpkin, leave it on the stage, and then come back on Saturday night for a magical walk through the Greenbelt Forest Preserve – illuminated by hundreds of jack o’lanterns! Pumpkins are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please bring your own carving equipment.

Moonlit Movie – Wallace & Gromit, the Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Kick off the Halloween weekend right with a spooky Moonlit Movie!

Xtreme Teens: Halloween Craft – Monster Slime; Ages 10-17
Creepy, crawly, or icky! Sound appetizing? Well, those are the only choices you get as we take arts & crafts to a whole new level! Prepare to get slimed and have a slick time with your friends!

Sunset Movie Series – Hotel Transylvania 
Bring your blankets or chairs and enjoy a Free movie in the park!

The City of Hyattsville is throwing a Halloween party with the Hyattsville Library! Start with a storytime at 12:30pm followed from 1-3pm by the Monster Mash Dance Party, photobooth, seasonal crafts to take home and a costume contest for those 12 and under.

Kids Spooky Boat Tour
Come aboard a fun, ghoulishly decorated boat ride down the Anacostia River to celebrate Halloween! Candy, music, and more to enjoy!

The General’s Future Charity is hosting its Community Harvest Fest! There’ll be candy, games, moon bounce, food & prizes for the kids to enjoy!

Cost: Free! 
From Lithuania, Papi Dapi Fish comes to the Publick Playhouse with “Forgotten Princesses,” a dance performance that transforms real-life situations into the imaginary world of princesses, and teaches children to cherish their unique qualities while creating valuable, respectful interactions with others.
When: 2pm

This event is where high school marching bands get a chance to showcase for each other their skills and talents on the football field. Guest performance by Bowie State University “Symphony of Soul” Marching Band.
When: 5:30-9:30pm

Cost: $5 per ticket

This free event will feature hands-on activities, exhibits, presentations by NASA scientists and – weather permitting – a telescope viewing of the moon and planets. Encouraged to wear space-themed costumes and children can collect space-themed treats at activity stations.

Night Hike – Ages 5+
When the sun sets, the refuge comes alive with the calls of owls and insects. Learn how noctural animal adaptations allow them to thrive in the darkness.
When: 6:30-7:30pm 
Where: National Wildlife Visitor Center, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel

Flick or Treat at Riversdale House Museum
In cooperation with the Town of Riverdale Park, join us for a family-friendly, outdoor spooky flick. Bring your blanket and settle in around the firepits. Movie snacks & light refreshments available while supplies last.
When: Saturday, Oct. 28th, 7-8:30pm
Where: Riversdale House Museum, 4811 Riverdale Rd, Riverdale Park
Cost: $5 adults; $2 children

Trick-or-treating (noon-2pm), movie (Hocus Pocus 12:30pm), chef pumpkin carving contest (2pm) & more! One free Capital Wheel child ticket with each paid adult ticket for children in costume! Darcars will be handing out bags and candy and will also have games to play!

Trunk or Treat at University Christian Church
The Trunk or Treat is a safe alternative to Halloween, allowing youngsters (with or without costume) to go car trunk to car trunk playing games and getting treats in our church lawn. We also have a live petting zoo, bouncy houses, music, and food to share.

Spooky Cellar w/ Daisy Troop 23005
Come take a tour of a haunted basement with Daisy Troop 23005 of Hyattsville/Riverdale! Wear your Halloween costumes. Stick around for games and snacks! Recommended for ages 4-8.
When: 4-6pm
Where: 4900 Sheridan St, Riverdale Park
