Kids' Weekday Fun Along Route One!

8/27/18: Please note that many classes/events take a break during the summer, so please call to confirm their status.

Who says kid-friendly fun is limited to the weekends? Not this lady! Below are just a sprinkling of ways for you and your kid(dos) to have fun along Route 1 during the week! While most of these are recurring events (some weekly, some biweekly), do yourself a solid and call to confirm that they're going on before you make any wild plans, like packing a lunch or a diaper bag. Or maybe both. :)

Be sure to bookmark this page as I'll update this post through the year. 👊 Likewise, if there are events that I missed, go ahead and post a comment below with the information. (Tuesday's lookin' pretty lonely....)  I'll update ASAP.

Check it Out: Local Fun! Patuxent Research Refuge

Me and the little lady stopped by the Patuxent Research Refuge earlier this week for one of their free Tiny Tots programs.  I was a little dismayed when I arrived and found that mine was the only car in the lot.  "Had I gotten the date wrong?" I wondered.  I immediately jumped to blaming my d@mN children.  Always interrupting momma's mornin' coffee intake which = not functioning properly, which = systems fail, which = dates & time and everything bungled.  Poor me.  But not really.  In fact, lucky me - because for once in my life, I had unwittingly managed to get me and my crew somewhere on time (in fact, an entire 30 minutes early).

Biz Review: The WaterHole, Organic Juice & Smoothie Bar!

I remember the first time I met Lisa Harris, the owner of The WaterHole in Mt. Rainier, Maryland.  I was on my way out of The WaterHole with my littlest one, after having finished a delicious, made-to-order carrot+beet+apple+ginger juice when Lisa approached from outside and held the door open for us and our wee stroller.  Not realizing she was probably eager to get inside, I started chatting away and picked her brain for recommendations on nearby things to do with my wee one.  Lisa didn't skip a beat.  She pointed out two nearby playgrounds, ran through the merits of each, suggested routes to explore along the way and recommended I check out a local mammas and pappas listserv for even more info on the topic.

Get Yr Live Music Fix at the Brentwood Arts Exchange!

BTS = Back to School, right?  Nope. Built to Spill, bizitches. That's the visceral reaction I have (though entirely internally) whenever I see these three simple letters together. You see, while I now pump Kidz Bop jams out my car speakers and subscribe to Real Simple over CMJ, I used to have a decent music sense (says moi). Indie rock shows & distortion pedals used to be a part of my regular ear candy. But then, kids + life + moving out of NYC + DC = what happened?

Ways to Save at Whole Foods Market

I'm really digging the new Whole Foods Market in Riverdale Park.  Sure, I love all of the incredibly colorful produce and am childishly entertained by fruits that look like they're from outer space (looking at you, Jackfruit), but I also appreciate the increased accessibility to foods that are free from artificial preservatives, colors, sweeteners, flavors, etc.

Eye Candy Galore Along Rt. 1 + Yr Chance to Show Some Hyattsville Luv)!

Have you seen the growing number of new, amazingly vibrant murals adorning the facades (and sides & behinds!) of many vacant buildings along the Route 1 corridor in downtown Hyattsville lately? So B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!  Turns out, the new murals are the fantastic work of Green Owl Design and UIP Development, who teamed up to revamp this part of the Route 1 corridor. The murals are all designed by local artists (listed below) and instantly beautify abandoned buildings that are slated for demolition. 👏  Methinks these awesome murals will totally be a draw to our area similar to how Union Market's Heart Wall is itself a destination for many folks.

Studio SoHy, Hyattsville: Making Art Accessible

Many times when we stop for a coffee at Hyattsville's Vigilante Coffee, we make it a point to stop by Studio SoHy's exhibit space - which is easy to do as it's right next door (just enter the door by the coffee fixins/water table & voila)!  Doing so is a such a great, easy, free and accessible way for us all to check out their latest exhibit and some new art!

District Taco's Almost Here!

Look what I spotted in the Whole Foods Market parking lot this morning:

Appears that District Taco is almost here, people! Or, maybe someone from District Taco was simply shopping at Whole Foods...but my spidey sense tells me it's the former! Compound that with the fact that my astigmatized eyes saw some folks walking in/around the to-be District Taco location and methinks I'm on to something....
