My lil Tuscadero-Indie rock heart is all aflutter, you guys! So many great live, local music options this weekend! Catch Indie electronic artist Jesse Magenta & his spacey vibes at Riverdale Park’s Robert Harper Books, Be Steadwell‘s queer pop at the Brentwood Arts Exchange’s Listening Room, and Orion Freeman‘s souled-out tunes at Mt. Rainier‘s ReCreative Spaces Listening Series.  All this & more great ideas along the Route 1 Corridor, behind the jump!


Opening Reception: One Year Later
To celebrate the 1st anniversary of Pyramid Atlantic’s epic move to its new Hyattsville home, Curator Molly Ruppert has assembled a group show of 52 artists to mark 52 weeks of occupancy with work priced at $365 or less to mark the days of the year.

Be Steadwell at the Listening Room 
Be Steadwell is a singer-songwriter from DC with roots in jazz, a cappella and folk.  Be composes a soulful blend of genres into what she calls queer pop.  Be’s self-produced albums feature her earnest lyricism, proud LGBTQ content, unapologetic silliness and the art of the simple love song.

Charlie Catacalos presents Jesse Magenta
Indie electronic artist Jesse Magenta is the project of up and coming musician Charlie Catacalos. Having gained some recognition in Philadelphia where Catacalos attends school, the first release under the name Jesse Magenta, Office Hours, is described as “a hidden gem, with spacey vibes and intimate feelings” by WXPN’s The Key music blog.

Beggars Tomb
A five piece band focused on recreating classic renditions of the Grateful Dead.

Yoga in the Parks
Learn basic moves to strengthen your body, increase flexibility and free your mind.  No registration required. Ages 13+

Rain Garden Workshop
Come for an introduction to rain garden design and installation, learn about the Rain Check Rebate Program, and a walking tour of local rain gardens.

Scavenger Sale 
Join ReCreative Spaces and artist Becky Borlan for Scavenger Sale, a used art materials market! Opps for artists and the public to donate items no longer needed, a place to pick up “new” materials at low cost and a chance to connect with other local artists, organization, etc.

A Tribute to Soul Divas
Relive the hit songs and powerhouse vocals of music’s greatest divas: Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Stephanie Mills and Chaka Khan.  You won’t want to miss!

ReCreative Listening Series: Orion Freeman 
Orion Freeman is a singing, songwriting, guitar-playing seeker from the woods just beyond the mortar and bricks of Philadelphia.  His souled-out, sometimes reggae-infused, flamenco-tinged, bluesy folk-rock aspires to move you in every way.
When: 8:30-10:30pm

Mahler’s Fourth Symphony 
A frequent guest of the National Orchestral Institute + Festival, Asher Fisch returns to lead Bartok’s tempestuous ballet score to The Miraculous Mandarin and Mahler’s Fourth Symphony.

Granny’s Ball of Odds
Alice “Granny” Donahue, a classically trained pianist, meets “Boys in the Hood” and brings you anything from ol’ school funk to Led Zeppelin to Burt Bacharah. As heard on WAMU and seen in the Huffington Post.
