Local Music + Tasty Local Craft Beer? Yes, please! (Hyattsville's HyFest is this Saturday!)

Tomato Dodgers all up in this piece!

If I told you there was a music showcase happening at Hyattsville's Polka Dot Park THIS Saturday featuring four local bands playing some r-n-r, punky reggae, action funk rock, and rootz reggae as well as some tasty local craft beer from Denizens and Calvert Brewing Company, you'd be like, "shawt up!" And I'd be like, "Totes Magoates." HyFest is happening this Saturday, people!

According to HyFest's fantabulous Krissi Humbard, the festival will "showcase local musical talent...and will help highlight all of the wonderful businesses that make Hyattsville so unique."

Local musicians Adam Ortiz (Blue Plains), Franklin Ventura (Mimi Loco and the Drama Queens) and Shawn Brown (Red Hare) are planning the pilot HyFest at Polka Dot Park, with the hopes that the event will grow into a series.
More from press release: "In its pilot, HyFest will bring together four bands from the DMV along with local Maryland vendors, making "local" the focus. Local breweries Denizens Brewing Co. and Calvert Brewing Company will provide cold beverages: Mister Magic will offer soft serve ice cream and frozen treats from his ice cream truck; Soul & Ink will screen print t-shirts and posters on site; Red Onion Records will set up a pop-up record shop' and Vigilante Coffee Company will be on hand with cold brew coffee.

HyFest is sponsored by Urban Investment Properties and in partnership with Hyattsville Community Development Corporation.

The bands:

Unring the Bell is a rock band fronted by Hyattsville city employee Joe Brewer. The group describes their sound as “the sonic equivalent of a unicorn with nunchucks: upbeat modern-rock with a pop edge that's destined to leave a scar.”

The Scotch Bonnets, formed in 2009, are punky reggae rockers from Baltimore whose infectious energy keeps the party jumping all night. Led by singer-guitarist Kristin Forbes (aka Lady Hatchet), the band’s tunes blend classic Jamaican groves with a funky fresh approach to American singer-songwriting.

Tomato Dodgers are an action-funk rock and roll band from College Park, Md. The group has been Spreading the cult of Illuminati rock & roll across the galaxy since 2013.

Proverbs Reggae Band is a positive unique, rootz reggae band utilizing strong lyrical content and musical expressions to uplift Rasta livity. Proverbs is the only reggae band in the D.C. Metropolitan area to maintain the authentic sound of Rasta Roots Reggae Music.

The beer:

Denizens Brewing Co.: Launched in 2014, Denizens is the only woman and minority owned and operated brewery in Maryland. Owners Emily Bruno, Jeff Ramirez, and Julie Verratti wanted to bring the camaraderie of the brewery taproom to the DMV and create a space where anyone could pull up a chair, grab a pint, and enjoy. They brew to honor time-tested traditions and styles, while also pushing the boundaries that define craft beer.

Calvert Brewing Company is Maryland's first designated farm brewery. With a dedication to pride, loyalty and quality, they are committed to building a better beer. Calvert makes a craft option to fit all tastes, whether you're new to craft, or the nerdiest of craft beer drinkers. They have a small brewing system on their farm in Prince Frederick, Md., and last year opened a state-of-the-art production facility and tap room in Prince George’s County, Md.

The vendors:

Soul & Ink, a mobile screen printing unit, was formed by husband and wife design team, Frankie and Sherry Meneses. Passionate about design for social change, the duo wanted to create an avenue to step away from the computer and into the community. One-of-a-kind items are screen-printed on the spot.

Red Onion Records is a vinyl shop in Washington, D.C., that buys and sells records. Owned by a Hyattsville resident, Red Onion Records has been open in the district for 11 years, with plans to open a second location in Hyattsville soon. The shop caters to both serious collectors and hobbyists.

Vigilante Coffee Company is an award-winning coffee roastery and cafe that is focused on quality product, perfecting the craft and building community. The roastery in Hyattsville opened in a former Ford Model T dealership in 2014. The crew added a second location in College Park just this year.

Mister Magic is an “old school” ice cream truck serving soft serve ice cream, sundaes, floats, shakes and other frozen treats. It’s a local favorite!
