Kids' Weekend Guide: April 27th-29th

Fun, free superhero event at the Mall at Prince Georges this Saturday!

Super Hero Saturday in Hyattsville, Maryland Day at UMD College Park, Family movie night in Mt. Rainier, STEM-fun in Laurel, Anacostia Riverwalk Trail in Bladensburg and Descubre El Bosque in Cheverly are just *some* of the awesome family-friendly events happening along Route One this weekend! FRIDAY (Rain in the forecast so lining up some indoor activities)

STEM-Fun at Diven's Den
Check out this new-to-you STEM-inspired playroom, teaching the kiddos about life in 1800s Laurel. Curious? Read my review of Diven's Den!

Mt. Rainier Nature Center
Check out some hands-on exhibits, live animals, educational displays, a play area and more at this fun, free, petite, local site. For a sneak peek, read about our time here!

Gymnastics Workshop / Open Gym at PG Sports & Learning Complex
This place is really great for 1-12 year olds! HUGE. Two climbing walls. Two foam pits. Tons of equipment for curious ones to explore and blow off some steam. Very clean. Spaces are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Parents are required to be on the floor with the children (Maximum 3 child:1 adult). Check out my review here!

Cost: $7 per child

Join us for an outdoor movie night hosted by Mount Rainier Elementary PTO. We will be screening Ferdinand! After Ferdinand, a bull with a big heart, is mistaken for a dangerous beast, he is captured and torn from his home. Determined to return to his family, he rallies a misfit team on the ultimate adventure.
When: 6-8pm

SATURDAY

Family Fun: Let's Recycle!
Learn how paper is recycled by doing it yourself. Turn shredded paper into a handmade card, and make a colorful envelope to go with it. Enjoy other games and activities related to recycling. This is a drop-in program: come when you wish and leave when you’re ready.
When: 10am-1pm
Where: National Wildlife Visitor Center, 10901 Scarlet Tanager Loop, Laurel

Join this one-day celebration of learning and discovery. The 20th annual family-friendly event will be one to remember, with fun and exciting demonstrations, exhibitions, performances and more. Come join the celebration, and explore our world of fearless ideas!

Super Hero Saturday!
Dust off your superhero costumes and unite with other caped crusaders at MPG to celebrate Superhero Day. Take photos with Black Panther, Batman, Captain America, Wonder Woman and Nakia. Enjoy a superhero ring toss game. Make your own superhero mask & meet the superheroes from Hyattsville VFD and Prince George's County Fire and EMS!

Double Dutch @ the Library! with DC Retro Jumpers 
Join us for some fantastic jump roping action as DC Retro Jumpers will be on hand to show you (and you family and friends) how to Double Dutch! All ages and experience levels are welcome!
When: 3-4pm

SUNDAY 
Anacostia Riverwalk Trail - Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens
Head to Bladensburg Waterfront Park (BWP) with your bikes and explore the 4-mile segment of the Trail now connecting the District with BWP! We packed lunches, parked at BWP and then walked the Trail all the way to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. It was lovely! Grab a bit of respite at Kenilworth, maybe eat that lunch you packed and then head back to BWP, where the kids can play/climb/laugh in an old B & O caboose.
When: Sunrise to Sunset
Where: Start at BWP, 4601 Annapolis Road, Bladensburg
Cost: Free!
The Challenge: Descubre El Bosque
(Discover the Forest) with your family at the Cheverly Town Park. Join the national competition to observe the most animals and plants in your area. Discover and learn through hand-on experience!
Bring your cellphone or tablet with the app, iNaturalist installed, Water bottle, Snacks, Sunscreen, a great attitude to learn and discover! Prizes, kids activities, food and lots of fun!
When: 3:30-6pm
Where: Cheverly Town Hall, 6401 Forest Road, Cheverly
Cost: Free!
