Kids' Weekend Guide: Jan. 5th-7th


Happy New Year, Route One! Are you ready for another fun-filled year of adventures with the young'ns along Route One? Me, too! Check out the menu below for fun, local activities and events to explore this weekend! (As well as a handy-dandy Snow Day Guide!)

FRIDAY 

At time of drafting this Guide, PGCPS announced Friday (1/5) will be a snow day. Yay. In addition to ideas below, check out my nifty Snow Day Fun Guide for Keeping Your Sanity. 

Storytime PopUp! @ The Waterhole
Join us for stories, songs, fingerplays and more at this innovation collaboration between PGCMLS & Mt. Rainier's fabulous organic juice & smoothie joint, The Waterhole. Best for 0-5 years old. Curious? Click here for my review of The Waterhole!

Cost: Free (Heads-up: Waterhole's menu is delish, highly recommend indulging!)

Rockin to Rhythm
Calling all Preschoolers and Toddlers! Bust a move and shake your sillies out at the Rockin' 2 Rhythm Storytime! Read here about what's to love at the Laurel Library!
When: 10:30-11am
Where: Laurel Library, 507 7th Street, Laurel
Cost: Free!

Smaland at College Park's Ikea
Kids play in indoor playground while yo enjoy some shopping or just relax/eat/peoplewatch at the restaurant upstairs. Kiddos must be potty trained and be 37'' to 54'' tall (so children typically b/w ages of 3-6). Tips: (1) Best to arrive earlier on in the day as day progresses, so do the entrances lines; & (2) Join Ikea Family & kids get extra 30 minutes to play (depending on capacity) & you get free mildly-decent coffee!
When: 10:30am - 7pm

Admission: Free!

On PGCPS Snow Days, the Old Greenbelt Theatre usually shows a free kids movie! PGCPS just announced snow day for tomorrow, Friday (1/5/18) so safe to assume OGT will be showing a free kids movie but call or check out the Theatre's Facebook page to confirm. Tip: Arrive 15-20 minutes early as theatre fills up quickly! 
When: 1pm

Super Saver Ice Skating!
Huge indoor ice skating rink with a warming hut and a snack bar - what else do you need?!
When: 3:15-5:15pm
Where: Herbert Wells Ice Rink, 5211 Campus Drive, College Park
Cost: $4 (skate rental included)!



SATURDAY

Block Calendar
You and your child can assemble a wooden block calendar to kick off the new year. Useful year-round, the block calendar is perfect for a tabletop display.
When: 9am-12pm

Folding Paper Stars Workshop
This traditional German craft brings bright colors to winter windows! Led by Ingrid Hass.

Three Kings Day Celebration
Celebrate the Hispanic tradition of the Three Kings Day Celebration with music, refreshments, and more. Kids 10 and under will receive a gift from the Three Kings. (Note: Must call 301-345-4918 to register.)

Toddler Time @ Art Works Now
Open studio time for toddlers and their accompanying adults. Even the youngest children can explore a variety of age-appropriate art materials in a safe, fun environment. What to expect? Read my review of Toddler Time at Art Works Now.

Spanish-English Ready 2 Read Storytime: Ages 3-5
Stories, fingerplays and songs will be presented in Spanish and English.

Cost: Free! 

Check out this free music and movement class for children 0-4 years old. I've done it with my wee one and we've had fun singing, dancing, making music with rhythmic instruments!

Cost: Free for newcomers! 

Screech & Kestrel 
Meet two of North America’s smallest birds of prey: the American kestrel and eastern screech owl. Both expert hunters, the American kestrel uses its acrobatic prowess, while the eastern screech owlis a stealthy silent hunter.
When: 1-2pm

Learn to play or improve your chess game. All ages are welcome!

Gametime @ Board & Brew
Board & Brew is a fun place to check out with your 5+year-old crowd. Why? Read my review here. With over 500 board games including Operation, Perfection, Hungry Hippos, etc., you'll easily have a good time! Speaking of eating up, they also have a good menu of kid-friendly options. And for my fellow coffee afficionados, they rotate between Vigilante, Mad Cap and Counter Culture coffee - so you'll be sure to get a tasty, quality brew while you're there!
When: Opens at 9 am
Where: 8150 Baltimore Ave, College Park
Cost: (Before 4pm) $2.50 p/p for games + the cost of whatever you may order from menu.

Community Art Drop-In
Come to this Sunday's Community Art Drop-in! Hosted by the Greenbelt Recreation Department Arts Program. Rework a famous masterpiece with teaching artist Racquel Keller. Participants will add paint, crayon and pastel to copies of old master paintings to make their own unique works of art.
When: 1-3pm 
Where: Greenbelt Community Center, Room 113 
Cost: Free!
