Kids' Weekend Guide: Thanksgiving Weekend 2017!

Happy Thanksgiving, Route One Friends and Families! Sharing some fun, kid-friendly ideas for this holiday weekend. Go on & bring the out-of-towners, show them all the fun we have along Route 1!

FRIDAY 

Storytime PopUp! @ The Waterhole
Join us for stories, songs, fingerplays and more at this innovation collaboration between PGCMLS & Mt. Rainier's fabulous organic juice & smoothie joint, The Waterhole. Best for 0-5 years old. Curious? Click here for my review of The Waterhole!

Cost: Free (Heads-up: Waterhole's menu is delish, highly recommend indulging!)

Smaland at College Park's Ikea
Kids play in indoor playground while yo enjoy some shopping or just relax/eat/peoplewatch at the restaurant upstairs. Kiddos must be potty trained and be 37'' to 54'' tall (so children typically b/w ages of 3-6). Tips: (1) Best to arrive earlier on in the day as day progresses, so do the entrances lines; & (2) Join Ikea Family & kids get extra 30 minutes to play (depending on capacity) & you get free mildly-decent coffee!
When: 10:30am - 7pm

Live Animal Show (Ages 2+)
Do you fancy yourself to be a Dr. Dolittle? The Nature Center is offering you a chance to meet their group of live animals including insects, reptiles, amphibians, and birds of prey. 
When: 2-3pm 
Where: Watkins Nature Center, 301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro
Cost: $3 residents; $4 nonresidents

Divine Slime Making (Ages 6-12) 
Come and form your own slime! Use household products to create a fun science masterpiece! 
When: 7-10pm 
Where: Bladensburg Community Center, 4500 57th Ave, Bladensburg 
Cost: Free!


SATURDAY 

Christmas Tree Ornament Workshop
Join our hands-on workshop where you and your child can create a holiday picture frame that doubles as a Christmas ornament. Register here. While supplies last. (So get there early as they DO run out...)
When: 9am-12pm
Where: Home Depot, both Hyattsville & College Park locations
Cost: Free!

Stories, Fingerplays, and songs will be presented in Spanish and English.
When: 11-11:30am

Stop by our pop-up cart at the museum and learn about various topics in aviation during our Discovery Cart Days at CPAM.
When: 11am-2pm 
Where: College Park Aviation Museum, College Park 
Cost: Free with museum admission

Chess/Checkers Club (All ages)
Hyattsville Chess and Checkers Club! Learn to play or improve your game. All ages are welcome! Bring your own set or play with one of ours.
When: 1-2:30pm
Where: Hyattsville Library
Cost: Free! 

This spectacular holiday drive-through event features over one million twinkling lights, wonderful themed displays, & one of the tallest tree displays in the state! Don't forget to bring canned goods/non-perishable items for donation to local food banks. Cash only.
When: 5-9:30pm
Where: Watkins Regional Park, 301 Watkins Park Drive, Upper Marlboro
Cost: $10/car


 SUNDAY 

ABC's of Yoga for Kids (Ages 2-12)
Come join for an interactive wellness initiative as children learn from the book "ABC's of Yoga!" Yoga and positive affirmations! Space limited - RSVP here.
When: 9am
Where: Whole Foods Market
Cost: $5 donation towards Hurricane Relief.

Gametime @ Board & Brew
Board & Brew is a fun place to check out with your 5+year-old crowd. With over 500 board games including Operation, Perfection, Hungry Hippos, etc., you'll easily eat up an hour or two of a cold, winter day! Check out my review of the Board and Brew, here.
When: Opens at 7 am
Where: 8150 Baltimore Ave, College Park
Cost: $2.50 p/p for games + the cost of whatever you may order from menu.
