Sensory Santa, PGCPS Sings & Holiday Fun at MPG!

With Thanksgiving in the rear view mirror (aside from the leftovers we're still making our way through), the holiday season is in full gear! If you're like my best friend, you've got all your holiday shopping done and the house already decorated. Which makes we wonder how we stay friends. 😄  Lucky for the rest of us, the Mall at Prince George's (MPG) is right around the corner and is having its PREIT Perks Member Weekend this Saturday and Sunday, with special offers like $50 Holiday Rewards Cash after spending $51 (!!!), mini-makeovers, free gift wrapping and more! They're also hosting great holiday activities, like Sensory Santa, Songs of the Season and a holiday vendor market. Who says the early bird gets the worm?! Read on, turtle doves!

Holiday Lights Along Hyattsville's Route One!

Hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving! We sneaked out for a bit on Friday evening to check out the holiday lights scene along Route One in Hyattsville, care of the SoHy Collective and their "Light It Up" event. I love holiday lights so along with my hot toddy, I was a very happy lady. ;)

Participating businesses stayed open late on Friday and many hosted some fun events to encourage foot traffic, including Hyattsville's Artist and Craftsman Supply, who drew me in with their promise of a keepsake Polaroid pic in some ugly Christmas sweaters. You clearly had me at "Hello."

Gotta love a man in shoulder pads!
With our late start and the clock ticking, we only intended to make it a short visit but I was quickly smitten with their selection and variety of arts and crafts goods. Holy cannoli do they have a lot of cool, quirky and fun items to get  lost in...like these colorful Mardi Gras/Eyes Wide Shut-type masks. So good to scare the children with! 😄

Got to meet the A & C staff - who were super nice and tremendously patient as I scurried through the aisles, trying to soak it all in before the clock struck 8pm. Thanks, duders!

Colton, Isak and Ray of Artist & Craftsman Hyattsville
With the later hours, I even got a chance to step into Pyramid Atlantic and pick up the 2018 Pyramid Atlantic Letterpress Calendars I bought for myself and some lucky relatives! 👏

Check out this dope "Handmade in Hyattsville" bag!
Some more cool storefronts and local sights to behold!

Centennial Park's Vainglorious Bluebird's rockin' a bow!
Tanglewood Works
Three Little Birds Sewing Co.

Green Owl Design got festive!

Hyattsville Vacuum Service did it up, too!

As did M & R Dominican Salon!

Looking forward to exploring and sharing more holiday pics of holiday fun along Route One!

Whoo Goes There?! Nest of Owls Calls University Park Home

Just last week, I did a quick post here about the Yellow-Crowned Night Heron sculpture in University Park, marveling about how the sculptor, Don Becker, created this work via chainsaw! Next thing you know, I learned Becker would be at it again soon - this time repurposing a stump across from UP's Tot Lot.

I stopped by this morning to check out his latest creation and snapped a couple of pics to supplement your afternoon watercooler chitter-chatter. 💬

Paint Branch Creek Plays to Standing-Room Only Crowd at Old Parish House!

Did you check out Paint Branch Creek this past weekend? If so, you saw this local Americana band play to a standing-room only (and then some) crowd at College Park's Old Parish House!

L --> R: Patrick Lynch, Greg Heelan, Allison Hughes, Eric Maring & Arun Ivatury
While Paint Branch Creek (PBC) has played before at Robert Harper Books and at College Park's Outdoor Music Series, this past weekend's performances at the Old Parish House was the band's Paint Branch Creek's "big unveiling of new songs," according to Eric Olson, PBC's chief songwriter! (And yes, this lyricist is the same Eric Olson who previously served on the Prince George's County Council, College Park City Council and who currently is the Executive Director of the College Park City University Partnership. Overachiever. 😆) The acoustic harmonies are played and belted out by local favorites Eric Maring (Mr M), Allison Hughes, Greg Heelan, Patrick Lynch, and Arun Ivatury.

I stopped by Saturday night to check out what all the buzz was about and ended up being treated to an evening filled with songs reminiscing about night shifts and mill towns, drives along long, vast stretches of America, a fun ditty about a '62 Cadillac and a somber, moving tribute to the memory of Zoe Falkenberg and her family.

As the event's description noted, PBC's songs "reflect on where we've been, some question where we're going, and some just linger on old memories." This event was truly a community gathering and effort, with neighbors Sean Cooney and Anissa Sunday deftly managing the band's lighting.

SantaFest at the Mall at Prince Georges is this Saturday (11/18)!

Update 11/17/17: SantaFest is now sold out! No more tickets are available.

Looking for a fun, free and fabulously local way to ring in the holiday season this year? Then RSVP here for your tickets to SantaFest at the Mall at Prince Georges - happening this Saturday, November 18th from 11am-2pm. We love this festive event so much that it's now our family's way of kicking off the holiday season. 🎅🎄🎅

Lest you confuse this SantaFest with another Santa-themed event involving grown folks running around the streets in Santa costumes, here are some details on what you've to look forward to:

🎅 Santa will be there! And not just any Santa: a jolly, naturally bearded, African-American Santa will arrive at Center Court (by Macy's), along with his trusty crew of Rudolph, the Nutcracker, Holly and Tinker Elf, all ready to spread some holiday cheer!

🎄 Kids' Arts & Crafts! Hyattsville's beloved Art Works Now will be there to guide kiddos through some awesome holiday art projects, including some DIY ornament making fun! Last year, my kids had a great time painting and decorating funky turkeys which they then gifted to the grandparents at Thanksgiving dinner. 💗 Tip: Bring extra wipes in case your kids enjoy painting detours, like mine do, and paint their hands....

Wee l'artiste, focusing on his craft!
📷 Photos with Santa! Instead of trekking across town to get your kid(s) photo with Santa, you can get that to-do item squared off your list at MPG! Santa and his crew will hold regular hours through December 24th and photo packages range from $24.99-$49.99. More details on Santa's schedule and package pricing hereTip: Become a PREIT Perks member ASAP. It's free, full of perks through the holiday season and will allow you to skip the line and jump to the Easy Pass entrance.  (Not a member? No worries; you can sign up here now or at the event for free access!)

⛄ Games & Prizes! Kids can try their luck at playing Santa's Cookies Bean Bag Toss and a Snowman Toss game. Last year, this kept the young ones happily occupied for quite some time!

🍪 Santa Cookies! After the kids have had fun checking out the art activities and games, MPG treats them to their own little bag of Santa cookies! We usually head to a nearby table/chairs to take in the sights and sounds. Speaking of, there'll be a DJ playing holiday music during SantaFest as well as Rudolph and his crew strolling around to lead us all in some sing-alongs. Really a lovely time!

While at MPG, look around and take in all of the good stuff happening there. New stores have opened and many more are on their way! Read my post on the updates to the Mall at Prince Georges for an overview of what's happened to date and stay tuned to Route One Fun for another update soon on the many more great changes to come!

Mark Your Calendar! So, after you register for SantaFest here and PREIT Perks here, be sure to also make note of the Black Friday shopping hours at MPG (6am-10pm) and explore their many other fun holiday happenings here!

See you at SantaFest this Saturday, Route 1! 👏

Winter is Coming! Indoor Fun & Deeelish Coffee at The Board and Brew, College Park

Sometimes, you just want to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee while challenging your first born to a vicious game of Stratego, know what I mean?  While we could do this at home, it's more fun to do it at The Board and Brew in College Park because (1) their coffee way more delish than my attempts; (2) it gets us out of the house; and (3) their board game library is way more extensive than our piddling collection. Like, 500+ games more extensive!!!

Flying Back Home to Riverdale Park

It's a bird!  It's a plane!  Sure is!  Have you seen the new airplane that flies atop of the MacAlpine Ice House at the entrance of Riverdale Park Station?  Jim Coleman of Riverdale Park Farmers Market guesses it to be an Ercoupe. Turns out, he is correct! Virtual high-five for you, Jim!
