Kids' Weekend Guide: July 21st-23rd


Check out all the fun, kid-friendly happs this weekend along and around our beloved Route 1! Some colonial dress-up, Summer Jam, Lego Batman Movie, Skateboarding, boat tour, solar eclipse & more! Don't forget to stop back later & share a comment about what you liked best!

FRIDAY

Family Fun: Bugs!
Insects and spiders and more, oh my! Learn about some of the little critters that call Patuxent home, through hands-on games, activities and crafts for all ages. Ages 3+. This is a drop-in activity: come when you wish and leave when you’re done. There is no registration. Check out my review of the Patuxent Research Refuge here

Blast-in-the-Past: A Hands-On History Playground
Montpelier's grounds are transformed into a kid-sized colonial village! Young visitors can camp out on the frontier, design a hat at the milliners, harvest crops at the farm, and much, much more. (Runs Thursday-Saturday, 7/6 to 8/5/2017.)
When: 10am-3pm

Storytime PopUp! @ The Waterhole

Join us for stories, songs, fingerplays and more at this innovation collaboration between PGCMLS & Mt. Rainier's fabulous organic juice & smoothie joint, The Waterhole. Best for 0-5 years old. Curious? Click here for my review of The Waterhole!

The Lego Batman Movie 
Come on out to Granville Gude Park and enjoy a movie for the whole family! Bring a blanket or chair, pack a picnic or grab something at our concession stand and relax for some great lakeside entertainment! Refreshments available for sale. Children under 13 not admitted without a parent/guardian.
When: 6:30pm

Hyattsville's Summer Jam Series!
Join us for a Summer Jam like no other! Join for live music by Just Us, a food truck, BBQ, delicious beer & wine options, our moonbounce and kids' activities!
When: 6:30-8:30pm
Where: City Municipal Bldg, 4310 Gallatin Street, Hyattsville
Cost: Free!

Night at the Movies!
The feature film will be a G or PG-rated movie, like Moana, Trolls or Sing for the enjoyment by all! Bring your picnic baskets, lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy a movie with the whole family under the stars!
When: 6:30pm (showtime 8:45pm)

SATURDAY 

Creature Feature: All About Reptiles
Meet and learn about the center's live reptiles. Ages 2 & up.
When: 10-11am

Toddler Time @ Art Works Now
Open studio time for toddlers and their accompanying adults. Even the youngest children can explore a variety of age-appropriate art materials in a safe, fun environment. What to expect? Read my review of Toddler Time at Art Works Now.

Live Animal Show 
Meet the nature center's live animals including reptiles, amphibians, and birds of prey. Ages 2+.

Cost: $3/residents; $4/nonresidents


Southside Music & Skateboarding Series
A skateboarding competition event with cash prizes in four competition categories. Live music and DJs. Guest Judges: DC Wheels.
When: 12-4pm (Onsite registration: Noon-12:45pm)
Where: Mt. Rainier Skate Park, 3792 Otis Street, Mt. Rainier
Cost: Free!

SUNDAY 

Fishing Boat Tour
Learn about casting, handling fish, fishing safety and fish biology. This program is for those with little or no experience. Program is weather permitting. Board our pontoon boat for a few hours of fishing catch and release down the Anacostia River! Bring your own rod or use one of ours.
When: 9:30am-12pm
Where: Bladensburg Waterfront Park, Boat Ramp
Cost: $10/resident; $13/nonresidents

Got Questions About the Solar Eclipse? Ask a Scientist!
Are you ready for the total solar eclipse on August 21st? Solar scientists Julia Saba and Keith Strong will be available to answer all your eclipse questions and share tips on how to view the sun safely!
When: 1-2pm
Where: Goddard Visitor Center, NASA Goddard Visitor Center, 8800 Greenbelt Road, Greenbelt
Cost: Free!

Family Movies on the Potomac - Disney's The  BFG
Nothing says summer like an evening under the stars! Pack your chairs, grab food to go from one of our delicious dining establishments, and meet us at the Plaza screen for a FREE evening of fun for all ages! As movie times/dates may change due to weather, check website for updates.
When: 4pm
Where: Waterfront Street, 165 Waterfront Street, National Harbor
Cost: Free!
