Weekend Fun Guide! Feb. 3rd-5th


This weekend's fun roster includes: The Uncle Devin Show (interactive musical experience for kiddos) in Hyattsville, The Clarice's Family Art Day, Minecraft in Greenbelt, Preschooler Yoga at College Park's Numi Yoga, Over & Under the Sea: Black History Month at Bladensburg Waterfront Park, and Upcycled Valentines Party at Tanglewood Works & more!  Check it out!

Toddler Time Fridays!
Open studio time for toddlers and their accompanying adults. Join us as we learn to make moonsand.  This DIY sand is a fun, sensory-centered project that little ones just love!

The Uncle Devin Show 
Join this interactive musical experience for children that uses percussion instruments to cultivate their minds - a dynamic cross between Schoolhouse Rock and The Muppet Show.  Children will be able to hear, see and play different percussion instruments.

Play & Grow 
This special storytime is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to learn more about their child's early developmental milestones and how to encourage growth through books, games, and songs.

SATURDAY 

Valentines Photo Box
Join our hands-on workshop and you and your child can build a Valentine-themed photo box, perfect for keeping photos of loved ones front and center. Once the box is built, your child can decorate it with paint and The Home Depot stickers. Tip: Get there early as supplies sometimes run out.

Put Art in Your Heart!
Hyattsville Aging in Place is hosting our 3rd annual free, all ages welcome!  We will provide a wide variety of art and craft supplies, fabrics, and other materials for you to get creative with and make Valentines for your loved ones and for our neighborhood seniors. Plus, there will be music and we'll have instant photos so you can personalize your Valentine (and some fun dress up options as well)!

Over & Under the Sea: Black History Month at BWP
Celebrate Black History Month by exploring the life, adventures, and achievements of black divers, pirates, privateers, watermen, and more!  Enjoy artifacts and exhibits, hands-on activities and crafts, and hear from special guest speakers from Underwater Adventure Seekers, one of the first
organizations for Black scuba divers. We will also have an interactive touch tank of live aquatic creatures and microscope station.  Register here.

An Artful Afternoon
Spend an artful afternoon making a mixed media wreath with artist Karla Lawrence (1-3pm), enjoying a puppet show by Greenbelt's own Beech Tree Puppets (3pm) and enjoy a stroll through the art studios and more (1-4pm)!

Lacrosse Clinic for Boys & Girls 
Learn about the elements of lacrosse, stick handling, passing, shooting and more! All equipment needed to participate will be available to borrow; participants should wear tennis shoes and athletic clothing. Pre-Registration is requested. Ages 5-14.

FRIDAY 

Voices in the Dark: Celebrating Black History 
In 1936, 70 years after the legal end of slavery in the United States, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt approved a historical research project commissioned by the Library of Congress. The goal of this enormous project was to locate and interview African Americans who had been born into slavery during the early to mid-1800s. More than 2,300 former slaves were interviewed; survivors of one of this country's darkest periods. Their stories became what are now known as the WPA Slave Narratives. Several of these incredible stories are brought to life in the original stage production "Voices in the Dark."

Hyattsville Horticulture Society's 8th Annual Seed Sale & Garden Fair
Come join us for our 8th annual seed sale & garden fair, including Hart's Seeds & Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.  Butterfly & beneficial insect garden and container garden displays.  Used gardening books.  Fresh baked goods and refreshments!

3D Pencil Model Workshop 
A hands-on guided workshop taught by Michael Horlick in which you will make a 72-pencil 3D Model that you can take home and show off! We have 15 spots available for participants, and no cap on the number of observers! Come through, have fun, and make something cool!  Ages 12+

Opening Reception at Pyramid Atlantic Arts Center 
Join us for the opening reception for Pyramid Atlantic’s Annual Juried Members’ Exhibition on February 4th 2-4 pm. Juror Joann Moser (Senior Curator Emerita, Smithsonian American Art Museum) will give her comments and present awards.

Movin' with the Mayor: iSadcie Caribbean Dance Exercise
To encourage health, wellness and physical activity among residents, Hyattsville's Mayor Candance Hollingsworth & local businesses have partnered to offer free introductory-level classes to all residents.  Join them as they work up a sweat doing iSadcie (described as "Island Zumba") and exercising along to soca, reggae, dancehall, chutney, Afro-beat and kumpa music.

34th Annual Choreographers' Showcase 
Called “a rite of passage in the DC-area dance community” by The Washington Post, the Choreographers’ Showcase is one of the longest-running showcases of new and established choreographers in the country.

SUNDAY 

Proteus Bicycle Coffee Ride
Join us for our regular Sunday quest for caffeine to Vigilante Coffee in Hyattsville. Meet at Proteus at 10 am for an easy ride along the beautiful Anacostia trail system, 10-12 miles round trip, some on road riding and street crossings. U.S. Marine Band Public Concert
“The President’s Own” United States Marine Band performs a concert titled “Wanderers,” conducted by Major Michelle A. Rakers. Highlights include John Philip Sousa’s The Grand Promenade at the White House (Coronation March) from Tales of a Traveler, Scott Lindroth’s Passage, Ottorino Respighi’s The Pines of Rome, and a Charles Ives Song Set.

Upcycled Valentine Party 
It's time for the 3rd Annual Upcycled Valentine Card making party. This year Tanglewood will be hosting in its NEW shop. Scissors, glue, paper punches, magazines and cards will be provided. Light refreshments will be served. Please bring any craft supplies that you would like to donate to the party.

From Cotton Field to Concert Hall 
All ages will enjoy this multi-media extravaganza of drumming, singing, dancing, music, spoken word, narration, and classical music. Follow a young slave from a plantation to the stages of great opera house in this invigorating performance that will gladden your heart.
