Kids' Weekend Guide! Feb. 24-26th

Chock full of great ideas and ways to make this weekend a fun, local and outdoorsy one! 

FRIDAY

Indian Creek Playground
Any time this weekend, check out this really fun and creative playground designed after Berwyn Heights' earliest residents - a group of Algonquian people known as Nacotchtank.  Kiddos will have  a blast climbing teepees, in an out of canoes and up and down dream catchers.  If you get hungry afterwards, check out

Black History Month Storytime PopUp!  @ The Waterhole 
Join us for Stories and songs that celebrate Black History Month at this innovative collaboration between PGCMLS & Mt. Rainier's fabulous organic juice & smoothie joint, The Waterhole. Toddler Time @ Art Works Now
Open studio time for toddlers and their accompanying adults.  Magic salt painting: Using glue, salt, and watercolor, toddlers explore that different materials interact while making cool art!

SATURDAY

Arts Drop-In: Popsicle Stick Puppets
Arts Drop-In with Aaron Springer is a fun time for kids and parents to get creative with a variety of craft materials and an imaginative facilitator.

Smaland at College Park's Ikea

Free, 1 hour, supervised, enclosed, safe & clean play area near the entrance.  Enjoy some shopping or just relax/eat/peoplewatch at the restaurant upstairs while your young one(s) has a blast at Smaland.  Children must be potty trained and be 37'' to 54'' tall (so children typically b/w ages of 3-6).  Tips: (1) Best to arrive earlier on in the day as day progresses, so do the entrances lines; & (2) Join Ikea Family & kids get extra 30 minutes to play (depending on capacity) & you get free coffee!

SUNDAY (50s and Sunny)

Winter Bird Walk (Ages 8 & older) 
Search for birds in several refuge habitats on this guided hike. Field guides and binoculars recommended.
When: 8-10am

Playground at University Hills Duck Pond Park 
Take advantage of this sunny though cool (but still awesome for Feb) day by packing a picnic, checking out the duck pond and then having fun at 1 of the 3 playgrounds at this park! There's one right at the entrance off of Wells Blvd but if you wander a bit on the bike path you'll find there's an even bigger, cooler one just down to the right with structures for the toddler and 5-12 crew.
When: Not on site - safe to assume dawn till dusk...

Afternoon of Sugar & Jazz
Break out the rolling pin and get the family together to bake your best cookies, to be enjoyed while listening to some sweet jazz. Bring two dozen cookies (all one kind), and your’s just might be named “Best cookie of Hyattsville.” Prizes will be awarded.
When: 4-6pm
Where: Hyattsville Municipal Building, 4310 Gallatin St., Hyattsville
Cost: Free!

  1. I'm a Mt. Rainier resident and really love your blog. It would be great to have a map feature on your website that links location pins to your blog write-ups--especially for the parks, etc. Thanks for the work you are doing to highlight our area!
